System-Wide PulseAudio Equalizer Updated For Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, Added 2 Patches

PulseAudio Equalizer

Remember the system-wide PulseAudio Equalizer?

Today I was updating most of the packages in the WebUpd8 PPA that I didn't update yet (not many actually) for Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal and I've remembered about some patches for PulseAudio Equalizer so I though I'd add them with this update.

These patches should fix the "Max Volume" bug and a bug with settings persistence.

PulseAudio Equalizer has been updated for both Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal and 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. Add the WebUpd8 PPA and install the system-wide PulseAudio Equalizer using the commands below:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install pulseaudio-equalizer

Oh, and if you find a bug, unfortunately there's nowhere to report it because PulseAudio Equalizer is no longer maintained.

Thanks to funnylife_ma and Fedora :) for the patches!

Download Pulseaudio System-Wide Equalizer Fixed .deb For Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat

Linux system-wide Pulseaudio Equalizer

Back in February we had a post on a system-wide Pulseaudio equalizer which still works great in Ubuntu Karmic and Lucid, but doesn't start in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat.

The official Pulseaudio System-Wide Equalizer PPA does not provide Maverick packages but in theory you could download and install the Lucid package and run it in Maverick just fine. However, that's not the case because of an icon (yes, just an icon!) which has been renamed in Ubuntu 10.10 which causes the equalizer not to start in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and you'll get this error:

File "/usr/share/pulseaudio-equalizer/pulseaudio-equalizer.py", line 362, in __init__
icon = self.window.set_icon_from_file("/usr/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/apps/gnome-volume-control.svg")
glib.GError: Failed to open file '/usr/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/apps/gnome-volume-control.svg': No such file or directory

This can be easily fixed but to make it even easier, I've built new PulseAudio System-Wide Equalizer Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat deb file:

The fixed Maverick package is also available in the WebUpd8 PPA so if you use our PPA you can search for it in Synaptic / Ubuntu Software Center and install it from there.

If you're using Ubuntu Karmic or Lucid, you can use the packages in the PPA.

Thanks to ubername @ Ubuntuforums for the fix!

PulseAudio System Wide Equalizer Now Has An Ubuntu PPA

pulseaudio equalizer

The system-wide Pulseaudio equalizer developed by psyke83 now has its own Ubuntu Launchpad PPA, for easy installation and updates.

To add the PPA, paste this in a terminal (Karmic and Lucid only!):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:psyke83/ppa

And then install it:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install pulseaudio-equalizer

Please note that this equalizer uses the LADSPA sound processing functionality of PulseAudio. For an implementation which does not rely on LADSPA processing, see THIS.

For more info and support on the PulseAudio System Wide Equalizer, see its thread @ ubuntuforums.

Update: the PPA in this post does not have packages for Ubuntu 10.10 and manually installing the .deb from this PPA in Ubuntu 10.10 will not work due to a bug. But I've uploaded a fixed package for Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat to the WebUpd8 PPA. See: Download Pulseaudio System-Wide Equalizer Fixed .deb For Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat

System-Wide PulseAudio Equalizer For Ubuntu

pulseaudio system wide equalizer

Ubuntu or PulseAudio actually really needs a good system wide equalizer. A project which initially begun as a simple script (actually it still is a script) now has become a fully working system wide PulseAudio equalizer. In the recent version, thanks to psyke83 the script comes with:

  • a GUI
  • .deb installer and presets (based on VLC's built-in equalizer) - so it's really easy to install and use by anyone.
  • 15 frequency bands you can adjust to your liking;
  • preamp will boost your equalized volume (as a multiplier value from 1x to 4x);
  • you can save your own presets

Once you install it, if there is no menu entry under Applications > Sound & Video, run this command to get a desktop shortcut:
cp /usr/share/applications/pulseaudio-equalizer.desktop ~/Desktop/

Then double click it and select "Mark as Trusted".

You can download the script and get support @ ubuntuforums.org | Direct download link*

*I suggest downloading the script from the ubuntuforums.org since new versions may be released. Only use the direct download link if you don't want to make an ubuntuforums.org account.
