Audacious 2.5.0 Released With Option To Dock Plugins Into The GTK Interface, Configurable Columns, More [PPA]

Audacious 2.5.0

Audacious 2.5.0 was released a few days ago, getting some very interesting new features like: option to dock some of the plugins (like album art, visualisation, lyrics) into the GTK interface, configurable playlist columns, support for GTK 3.0 (but the version in the WebUpd8 PPA is not compiled with GTK 3.0 support), a reorganized preferences window, a new New Cairo-based spectrum visualization plugin, new buttons for shuffle and repeat and much more.

For a complete list of changes, check out the Audacious 2.5.0 changelog.

The new option to dock plugins into the interface is a bit tricky so here's how to use it: once you enable a plugin that opens a separate window, under the titelbar there is a small plugin title which you need to right click and then you can select to dock it to the main Audacious interface. I've recorded a video so you can see exactly how to do this:

Install Audacious 2.5.0 in Ubuntu

As usual, the latest Audacious (2.5.0) is available in the WebUpd8 PPA for Ubuntu 11.04, 10.10 and 10.04. Install it using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious

If Audacious 2.5.0 fails to start for you or you get a segfault when enabling some plugins, remove the Audacious config folder:
rm -r ~/.config/audacious

Unlike other PPAs and the Ubuntu official repositories (Audacious 2.5.0 is not yet available in Natty but anyway), Audacious from the WebUpd8 PPA is built with "libguess" enabled (which provides automatic character code detection) and also, the Audacious Plugins package has PSF support (Playstation Sound Format) enabled.

Note: I've only tested it in Ubuntu 11.04 and 10.10. Even though I still maintain packages for Ubuntu 10.04, I cannot test them!

Install Audacious 2.4.4 (Music Player With GTK And Winamp-Like Interface) In Ubuntu [WebUpd8 PPA]

Audacious music player is a fork of Beep Media Player (BMP), which itself forked from XMMS. It looks a lot like Winamp 2.x (and the playlist, song adding functions and so on, are similar to Winamp) but it also comes with a GTK interface.

The clean interface, amazing functionality with lots of plugins and a low memory footprint have helped Audacious become the default music player in Lubuntu 11.04 (replacing Aqualung).

(Audacious - Winamp 2.x interface)

We've received a lot of requests for this so here it is: Audacious 2.4.4 is finally available in the WebUpd8 PPA.

Further more, the packages in the WebUpd8 PPA have been built with "libguess" enabled (which provides automatic character code detection) as requested by WebUpd8 reader rAX a while back. The Audacious packages in both Ubuntu and Debian are not built with libguess because libguess is not available in Debian yet - but it's now available in the WebUpd8 PPA.

Unfortunately I don't have a changelog for the latest Audacious 2.4.4 so if you want to know what's new, I'm sorry but I can't help you.

Install Audacious 2.4.4 in Ubuntu

Audacious 2.2.4 is available in the WebUpd8 PPA for Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04 - install it using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious audacious-plugins

Audacious 2.4.3 Available In The WebUpd8 PPA

Audacious 2.4.3

Audacious is a lightweight music player for Linux (but it seems version 2.5 will work on Windows too) that comes with two interfaces: a GTK interface and a Winamp 2.x-like interface that supports Winamp skins:

Audacious 2.4.3

This post is just to let you know that I've updated the Audacious packages in the WebUpd8 PPA (for Karmic, Lucid and Maverick) to the latest 2.4.3 version (backported from Natty). Unfortunately as usual, I don't have a changelog for the latest Audacious so I don't know what's new in this release but most probably it's just bug-fixes.

Install Audacious 2.4.3 in Ubuntu using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious audacious-plugins

Install Audacious 2.4.2 In Ubuntu [PPA]

Audacious 2.4.2
(Audacious 2.4.2 - GTK interface)

Audacious 2.4.2 was released a while back and I got a lot of requests to upload it to the WebUpd8 PPA, but because of some changes in the latest Audacious I had to wait until the official Debian packaging was updated. So finally, Audacious 2.4.2 is now available in the WebUpd8 PPA.

Audacious is a audio player that looks like Winamp 2.x, sharing some of its functionality too. Starting with Audacious 2.4, the Winamp-like interface is not default anymore - Audacious now uses a clean and light GTK interface which will remind you of Deadbeef. The old Winamp interface is still available and can be enabled from the options.

Audacious 2.4.2 winamp interface
(Audacious 2.4.2 - Winamp-like interface)

Audacious' strength consists in its huge plugin list: Audio Compression plugin (AudioCompressor AGC) to keep volume normalized at a specific level, Echo enhancing plugin, Crystallizer enhancing plugin, Voice Removal plugin, Sound stretching plugin, lots of visualisation plugins (Blur scope, Spectrum analyzer, RockLight and so on) and even a stream browser plugin which includes the most popular streaming directories. There's a huge list of plugins so install Audacious and try them for yourself.

It seems the Audacious developers are not fans of changelogs so I couldn't find a list of what's new in the latest Audacious 2.4.2, but judging from the Mercurial log it seems the new version only comes with bug fixes.

Install Audacious 2.4.2 in Ubuntu

Audacious 2 Ubuntu

Audacious 2.4.2 is available for Ubuntu Maverick, Lucid and Karmic, however please note that I've only tested it on Maverick! Add the WebUpd8 PPA and install Audacious 2.4.2 using the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious audacious-plugins

WebUpd8 PPA Updates: gThumb 2.11.6, Audacious 2 2.4 Beta 2, Newsbeuter 2.3

I updated a few packages in the WebUpd8 main PPA as well as in the Unstable PPA so I though I'd let you know what's going on.

gThumb 2.11.6 was released - there aren't major new features just some small ones such as the ability to sort by path. A full list of changes can be found @ Gnome Announce mailing list.

I don't know if you noticed this, but we've updated the gThumb 2.11.5 package with support for Clutter - Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx only. With the new gThumb 2.11.6, we've compiled both the Lucid and Maverick packages with Clutter - this means you can get some fancy slideshow effects. To use it, in gThumb go to Edit > Extensions and enable the Slideshow extension. Then, under Edit > Preferences you should have a new "Slideshow" tab where you can set the transition effect.

Thanks to Guido for the Clutter tip!

Unfortunately for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala users, gThumb 2.11.5 will be the last version they will be able to update to. Starting with gversion 2.11.6, gThumb requires gtk+-2.0 >= 2.20.0 and Karmic comes with GTK+ 2.18.3, so we'll no longer provide gThumb updatesfor Ubuntu Karmic users.

In case you're not using our PPA, add it and install gThumb 2.11.6 for Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx or 10.10 Maverick Meerkat (or gThumb 2.11.5 for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala) using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gthumb

We also provide a separate PPA for gThumb only.

Audacious2 2.4 Beta 2 was released to Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat last night so we've uploaded it to our Unstable PPA. This version comes with bug-fixes only.

Install Audacious2 2.4 Beta 2 in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala and 10.04 Lucid Lynx using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/unstable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious audacious-plugins

Newsbeuter is an open source command line feed reader for Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X and other Unix-like operating systems. It has Google Reader and Bloglines sync support as well as other amazing features. Version 2.3 which we've uploaded to the WebUpd8 PPA fixes Google Reader authentication, HTML rendering of bold and underline text when light background is configured and many other bugs.

Install it in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, 10.04 Lucid Lynx or 10.10 Maverick Meerkat using the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install newsbeuter

Install Audacious2 2.4 In Ubuntu, Now With An Improved GTK Interface, Last.fm Scrobbler Plugin And More

Audacious2 is a audio player that looks a lot like Winamp 2.x and it also has some similar features such as "J" for searching the playlist, song adding functions are similar to Winamp and it even supports Winamp 2.x skins. Audacious also comes with a GTK interface so if you don't like the way Winamp looks, you can always make Audacious look like your current GTK theme.

Besides the usual features every music player has, Audacios also comes with a lot of great plugins: Audio Compression plugin (AudioCompressor AGC) to keep volume normalized at a specific level, Echo enhancing plugin, Crystallizer enhancing plugin, Voice Removal plugin, Sound stretching plugin, lots of visualisation plugins (Blur scope, Spectrum analyzer, RockLight and so on) and even a stream browser plugin which includes the most popular streaming directories. There's a huge list of plugins so better install Audacious and try them for yourself.

Since the new Audacious2 is becoming an amazing audio player, we've backported Audacious2 2.4 from Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick (so if you're running Maverick, you can install it from the official repositories) to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and 9.10 Karmic Koala. Update: since Audacious 2.4 final has been released and is not yet available in Maverick, we've updated the PPA with Audacious 2.4 final for Ubuntu Karmic, Lucid and Maverick!

Audacious2 2.4 comes with a lot of important bug fixes, a reworked GTK interface and also the Last.fm scrobbler plugin returns, this time threadless and without memory corruption problems.

Here is the new GTK interface:

audacious2 2.4 gtk interface

As you can see, the GTK interface looks clean, simple (DeadBeef like) yet very powerful through the amazing plugins Audacious2 comes with.

Audacious2 Windamp-like interface:

Audacious2 2.4 winamp interface

We've uploaded Audacious 2.4 to the webupd8team/unstable PPA (the PPA also comes with the Sezen Applet, the latest Freetype backported from Maverick as well as the latest mc).

To install Audacious2 2.4 in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, 10.04 Lucid Lynx or 10.10 Maverick Meerkat run the following commands in a terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/unstable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious audacious-plugins

Update: initially the package in our PPA was Audacious 2.4 beta 1, but we have updated it to Audacious 2.4 final! Also, the Audacious 2.4 packages are now also available in the main WebUpd8 PPA.

Install Audacious 2.3.0 In Ubuntu Via PPA Repository

Audacious music player is a fork of Beep Media Player (BMP), which itself forked from XMMS. It looks a lot like Winamp 2.x (and the playlist, song adding functions and so on, are similar to Winamp).

Audacious can play basically any kind of audio file, even game music console formats such as AY, GBS, GYM, HES, KSS, NSF, NSFE, SAP, SPC, VGM, VGZ, VTX.

What I like the most about Audacious is that it comes with some audio effect processing plugins, such as:

  • Can function as a LADSPA host
  • Audio Compression plugin (AudioCompressor AGC) to keep volume normalized at a specific level
  • Echo enhancing plugin
  • Crystallizer enhancing plugin
  • Stereo separation plugin
  • Voice Removal plugin
  • Sound stretching plugin
  • more

A full list of Audacious features can be found
HERE.

Audacious comes with two interfaces

Winamp-like interface:

Audacious simple GTK interface:

audacious 2.3 screenshot

The latest version is 2.3.0, which doesn't bring many visual changes but a log of changes under the hood:
  • Decoders can be sorted by priority
  • Improved resampling support
  • Support for gapeless playback
  • Significantly revised the ALSA and OSS modules
  • Reworked the LADSPA module
  • Improved support for corrupt mp3s
  • The tray (notification area) icon works again

Install Audacious 2.3.0 in Ubuntu

Getdeb usually provides the latest Audacious packages for Ubuntu users, however the latest 2.3.0 is not yet available, so here is how to install Audacious 2.3.0 in Ubuntu Karmic and Lucid:

1. Add the WebUpd8 PPA
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8

2. Install Audacious 2.3.0
Then, run this to install Audacious 2.3:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install audacious

Update: Audacious 2.3.0 is now available in the official Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx repositories, so to install it all you have to do is paste this in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install audacious
