gThumb 0.13.1 screenshot

gThumb is an image viewer and photo manager for GNOME. It comes with options to edit photos, transfer photos from digital cameras and upload photos to popular websites such as Facebook, PicasaWeb, Photobucket, Flickr and more.

A new gThumb version (2.13.1) was released recently, bringing quite a few improvements. There are two new tools: contact sheet creator (creates an index image displaying the thumbnails of the selected files) and an extension that finds and removes duplicates and there's also a new histogram program.

Here are some other interesting changes in the latest gThumb 2.13.1:
  • Re-added ability to view file comments in the file list
  • Added ability to drag files with the middle mouse button to allow the user to choose the action to perform
  • Added ability to move catalogs with drag&drop
  • Change date tool: added the ability to shift dates by any offset
  • Crop tool: added a new grid mode to view the center lines of the current selection
  • Added ability to search and filter files with a single tag
  • New thumnail style: round corners; Another change to the thumbnails which will now use thr same height - this allows to avoid
  • scroll jumps when loading the thumbnails listed before the currently
  • visible ones
  • Added a comment filter that ignores automatic camera comments such as "SONY DSC", "OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA", etc
  • Re-added the 2.10 semi-trasparent property box in fullscreen mode. The 'i' key shows/hides the property box
  • Print: allow to specify the number of rows and columns; allow to specify the header and the footer of the pages
  • Allow to rename the files in a catalog
  • Many other minor tweaks and bug fixes

Install gThumb 2.13.1 in Ubuntu

As usual, the latest gThumb is available in the WebUpd8 gThumb PPA (for those who only want to install gThumb) as well as in the main WebUpd8 PPA (along with other packages we maintain). Add the gThumb PPA and install gThumb 2.13.1 in Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/gthumb
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gthumb

To enable the new extensions, start gThumb and go to Edit > Extensions and enable "Find Duplicates" and "Contact Sheet".

gThumb

gThumb is an image viewer / photo manager for GNOME. It includes options to edit photos, transfer photos from digital cameras, upload photos to websites such as Facebook, PicasaWeb, Photobucket, or Flickr and so on.

Quick update: gThumb 2.12.2 has been released last night and as usual, it's available in our gThumb PPA as well as the main WebUpd8 PPA.

gThumb 2.12.2 is a bug-fix release only. Here is the changelog:
  • Correctly activate the default extensions when started the first time
  • Enable building with exiv2-0.21
  • Launch a single instance of Gimp when opening many files at once
  • Fixed folder renaming
  • Fixed search in catalogs not ginving any result
  • Fixed crash on thumbnail generation
  • Web Albums: update the file info when scaling the original image
  • New or updated application translations: Basque (Iñaki Larrañaga Murgoitio), German (Mario Blättermann), Japanese (Takeshi AIHANA), Russian (Yuri Myasoedov)

PPA Updates: Minitube, gThumb, Launchpad Getkeys, Dropbox Share

This post is just a short summary of some updated packages in the WebUpd8 PPAs.

Minitube

Minitube

Minitube stopped working yesterday due to some changes to the YouTube website. The update broke all applications for playing / downloading YouTube videos, but luckily Minitube has been updated (version 1.3) to include a fix. The new version also comes with a new icon and is available as always in the main WebUpd8 PPA, for Ubuntu Lucid and Maverick:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install minitube

Unfortunately this version also comes with a regression: the Linux version has lost its seeking functionality. Hopefully it will be re-added in a future version.

gThumb

I've also updated gThumb (2.12.1) which is now in sync with Debian unstable. This is not a new version of the application but a new version of the packaging which fixes some pretty important bugs. As usual, gThumb is available both in the WebUpd8 gThumb PPA and in the main WebUpd8 PPA.

Install it from the gThumb PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/gthumb
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gthumb

Launchpad Getkeys

Late last night I've updated Launchpad Getkeys to work with non-English Ubuntu. Initially, the script only worked if you had installed Ubuntu in English.

Install Launchpad Getkeys:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install launchpad-getkeys

Unfortunately the script does not work if you need a proxy.

Dropbox Share

Dropbox Share has been updated to use "dropbox-index.html" instead of "index.html" file name when sharing a folder (an .html file is created when sharing a folder so you can easily navigate all the subfolders in a web browser). The new version also removes these dropbox-index.html files automatically when unsharing a folder (and when the script notices you've removed the link from the Dropbox Public folder).

Install Dropbox Share:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install dropbox-share

gThumb 2.12.0 (Stable) Has Been Released [Ubuntu PPA]

gthumb 2.12.0
gThumb is an image viewer and browser utility for the GNOME environment.

Finally, after a long period of development, a new stable gThumb version has been released: 2.12.0. We've been following the gThumb development here at WebUpd8 so you should already be up to date with all the changes. To mention just a few new features since the last stable version (not development!): Facebook, Flickr, PicasaWeb and Photobucket export, import from Flickr and PicasaWeb, gThumb can now play videos and many many other new features and improvements which I'll not cover since we already talked about all of them throughout the gThumb 2.12 development posts (gThumb 2.11.x was the development branch for gThumb 2.12). You can read all about the gThumb 2.12.0 new features by browsing our gThumb posts.

Install gThumb 2.12.0 in Ubuntu

gThumb 2.12 is not available in the Ubuntu 10.10 official repositories (I'm not sure if the final version will be available), not to mention Ubuntu 10.04 but we maintain a PPA just for gThumb so you can easily install it in Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/gthumb
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gthumb

The latest gThumb 2.12.0 is also available in the main WebUpd8 PPA so if you're using it, you can also upgrade to 2.12.0 using that PPA.

gThumb 2.11.92 Fixes Export To Facebook [Ubuntu PPA]

gThumb 2.11.92

We're always updating the packages in the WebUpd8 PPAs but only sometimes post the news on WebUpd8 - just this week we've updated: Jupiter, Zaz, GIMP Plugin Registry, MintMenu and others (and of course VLMC which comes in a daily builds PPA). See all the packages we maintain in the WebUpd8 PPAs, here.

This time I though I should let you know that the latest gThumb 2.11.92 comes with a fix for the Facebook export which was broken for a while now. A complete changelog can be found here.

gThumb 2.11.92 is not available in the official Ubuntu 10.10 repositories. But you can install it in both Maverick and Lucid using our gThumb PPA or the main WebUpd8 PPA.

WebUpd8 PPA Updates: gThumb 2.11.6, Audacious 2 2.4 Beta 2, Newsbeuter 2.3

I updated a few packages in the WebUpd8 main PPA as well as in the Unstable PPA so I though I'd let you know what's going on.

gThumb 2.11.6 was released - there aren't major new features just some small ones such as the ability to sort by path. A full list of changes can be found @ Gnome Announce mailing list.

I don't know if you noticed this, but we've updated the gThumb 2.11.5 package with support for Clutter - Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx only. With the new gThumb 2.11.6, we've compiled both the Lucid and Maverick packages with Clutter - this means you can get some fancy slideshow effects. To use it, in gThumb go to Edit > Extensions and enable the Slideshow extension. Then, under Edit > Preferences you should have a new "Slideshow" tab where you can set the transition effect.

Thanks to Guido for the Clutter tip!

Unfortunately for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala users, gThumb 2.11.5 will be the last version they will be able to update to. Starting with gversion 2.11.6, gThumb requires gtk+-2.0 >= 2.20.0 and Karmic comes with GTK+ 2.18.3, so we'll no longer provide gThumb updatesfor Ubuntu Karmic users.

In case you're not using our PPA, add it and install gThumb 2.11.6 for Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx or 10.10 Maverick Meerkat (or gThumb 2.11.5 for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala) using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gthumb

We also provide a separate PPA for gThumb only.

Audacious2 2.4 Beta 2 was released to Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat last night so we've uploaded it to our Unstable PPA. This version comes with bug-fixes only.

Install Audacious2 2.4 Beta 2 in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala and 10.04 Lucid Lynx using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/unstable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious audacious-plugins

Newsbeuter is an open source command line feed reader for Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X and other Unix-like operating systems. It has Google Reader and Bloglines sync support as well as other amazing features. Version 2.3 which we've uploaded to the WebUpd8 PPA fixes Google Reader authentication, HTML rendering of bold and underline text when light background is configured and many other bugs.

Install it in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, 10.04 Lucid Lynx or 10.10 Maverick Meerkat using the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install newsbeuter

gThumb 2.11.5

gthumb 2.11.5

gThumb 2.11.5 was released 2 days ago and is now available in the WebUpd8 PPA. New features in this version include:
  • Added ability to add a tag to the selected files from the context menu

  • Added ability to sort by image/video dimensions
  • Added ability to search/filter by modified/original date
  • Added other keyboard shortcuts

And of course, lots of bugs were fixed.

Install gThumb 2.11.5 in Ubuntu from the WebUpd8 PPA (available for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. 10.04 Lucid Lynx and 10.10 Maverick Meerkat):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8 && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gthumb

Or, if you don't want to use the WebUpd8 PPA which also comes with a lot of other packages, you can use this gThumb PPA we've set up a while back.

Minitunes 0.1.1

minitunes 0.1.1

Minitunes 0.1.1 is a bugfix release only and includes a potential stack overflow fix which would cause Minitunes to crash when adding your music library.

Install Minitunes 0.1.1 in Ubuntu (Kamic, Lucid and Maverick):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8 && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install minitunes

Subtitle Editor 0.37.1

Subtitle Editor 0.37.1 is also a bugfix release only and you can install it in Ubuntu (Karmic, Lucid and Maverick) using the following commands:

gThumb 2.11.4 and Subtitle Editor 0.37.0 Available In The WebUpd8 PPA

gThumb 2.11.4 and Subtitle Editor 0.37.0 have been recently released so we've uploaded both of these application versions in the WebUpd8 PPA.

gThumb

gthumb 2.11.4

gThumb is a photo manager / organizer for GNOME. THe 2.11.x branch is currently in development and it got a lot of useful features such as plugins to export the photos to Flickr, PiacasaWeb, Facebook and a lot more.

The gThumb 2.11.4 package in the WebUpd8 PPA is a GIT version a few days newer than the release of the 2.11.4 tarball due to some bugs because of which the build failed.

Since version 2.11.3, gThumb got a Photobucket export extension, allow to edit the metadata of many files at the same time, in the Crop tool added an optional grid, added ability to select the aspect ratio in the Resize tool and more. A complete list of changes can be found HERE.

To install gThumb 2.11.4 in Ubuntu, use the following commands (Ubuntu Karmic, Lucid and Maverick):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8 && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gthumb

Remember: gThumb 2.11.x is still in development so there might be bugs!

Subtitle Editor

subtitle editor

Subtitle Editor is a tool to edit subtitles for Linux. It can be used for new subtitles or as a tool to transform, edit, correct and refine existing subtitle. This program also shows sound waves, which makes it easier to synchronise subtitles to voices.

The version in the Ubuntu Lucid official repositories is 0.30.0 while Subtitle Editor already reached version 0.37.0.

Version 0.37.0 fixes some very important bugs which you can see here.

To install Subtitle Editor 0.37.0 in Ubuntu Karmic, Lucid or Maverick, use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8 && sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install

gThumb 2.11.x Development Build Adds Photobucket Exporting Capabilities [New PPA]

gthumb 2.11.3 ubuntu screenshot

I'm a bit sad gThumb 2.11.x (photo manager) was removed from the Ubuntu 10.04 official repositories because the 2.11.x development branch is amazing! gThumb 2.11.x can now export your photos to PicasaWeb, Facebook, Flickr and a few days ago it also added Photobucket to the list. gThumb 2.11.x can also import from PicasaWeb and Flikr and it comes with a lot more new features which we've talked about lots of times. If only it would add face recognition like digiKam will...

Because gThumb 2.11.x is not available in the Ubuntu 10.04 repositories, we've maintained it in the WebUpd8 PPA, but starting today, we'll also mantain a separate gThumb PPA for those who don't want all the upgrades which come with the WebUpd8 PPA and only want to install gThumb 2.11.x. Both the package in the WebUpd8 PPA and WebUpd8 gThumb PPA come with the new Photobucket export feature.

You can add the WebUpd8 maintained gThumb PPA using the following command (for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala and Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx only!):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/gthumb && sudo apt-get update

Then install gThumb:
sudo apt-get install gthumb

gThumb 2.11.x is a development branch so expect to find bugs!

Note: if you're getting an error such as this when trying to play a video in gThumb (or just when running gThumb): "The program 'gthumb' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'." - this is caused by using the RGBA transparency PPA so either backlist gThumb or remove the packages installed from the RGBA PPA altogether.

gThumb Photo Manager 2.11.3 Released

gthumb 2.11.3

Speaking of gThumb, a new development version - 2.11.3 - has been released.

Changes in gThumb 2.11.3 since 2.11.2:

  • Added an "Export to disc" tool, to burn files to optical discs.
  • Added a Flickr importer and exporter.
  • Added a Facebook exporter.
  • Save web account passwords in the GNOME Keyring if available.
  • Added option to avoid to store metadata in files.
  • Added a thumbnail pane in viewer mode.
  • Read the image thumbnail from the embedded metadata if available.
  • Organize extensions in categories.
  • Added a fade effect to the slide transition.
  • Make shift-click select a range of consecutive files.
  • Use delete to move to trash and shift+delete to delete files.
  • Updated the user manual.

This new version should be available in the WebUpd8 PPA for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic and 10.04 Lucid, in a few moments.

gThumb 2.11.x Removed From Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx; Latest Version Adds Facebook Export

gthumb 2.11.2.1 screenshot

gThumb is a Linux photo manager which came in third place in our "Best Linux Photo Manager / Organizer" poll.

An update in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx yesterday reverted gThumb from 2.11.x to 2.10.11:

Revert to 2.10.11. It appears that 2.11.x series is not stable enough for an LTS with too many big changes. The new workflow isn't documented enough as well. (LP: #545871)

The package in Lucid is now called "gthumb_2.11.2.1.is.2.10.11-0ubuntu1".

This is a big hit to gThumb which adds a lot of amazing features in the latest 2.11.x series, such as Flickr and Picasaweb export support. Even more, the latest GIT build also includes a new extension to export photos to Facebook.

If you still want to use gThumb 2.11.x in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx (ther are packages for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala too), you can use the WebUpd8 PPA (for Lucid and Karmic):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gthumb

Before installing, please remember that the WebUpd8 PPA publishes some experimental packages (from GIT, SVN, etc.) like VLC 1.1.0, Murrine GTK engine from GIT and so on. You have been warned!

Known issues:

I noticed a bug with Nvidia graphics cards which displays the following error (but gThumb still works):
NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidiactl (Permission denied).

You can fix it by using the following command:
sudo chown YOUR_USERNAME /dev/nvidia

replacing YOUR_USERNAME with... your username.

gThumb Finally Gets Flickr Support (Latest Build Is Available In The WebUpd8 PPA)

gthumb flickr support

Today seems to be a very good day for GNOME photo managers. After Shotwell 0.5 release, gThumb got a really nice extension which many of you I'm sure have been waiting for. Read on!

The gThumb development is getting more and more interesting (if you constantly read WebUpd8, you already know about the great progress gThumb is making) and after getting PicasaWeb support about a month ago, a branch called "flickr" (well, actually "flicker" but that's a typo by the developers) has been merged, meaning gThumb will finally get Flickr support. We couldn't resist so we updated the package in our PPA to the latest GIT so you (and us) can enjoy this cool new feature.

gThumb 2.11.2.1 now also has a brand new "export-to-disk" extension which allows you to export photos to your CD/DVD-RW; basically gThumb is getting new features every day. Other older changes include a "convert format", a "change date" and "resize image" tools and a lot of other new features and plugins.

gthumb flickr upload

To enable the new Flickr plugin (after installing the latest gThumb photo manager 2.11.2.1-git - see below), go to Edit > Extensions, then check the "Flickr" extension. Then select a photo or multiple photos and go to File > Export to > Flickr. Unfortunately, Flickr import is not supported (well, for now anyway).

Install the latest gThumb (from GIT as of March 12, 2010) in Ubuntu Karmic and Lucid

Before installing, please remember that the WebUpd8 PPA publishes some experimental packages (from GIT, SVN, etc.) like VLC 1.1.0, Murrine GTK engine from GIT (to support the latest "Light" Ubuntu themes - by the way, we also have those in our PPA for Karmic and Jaunty, constantly updated and in sync with their release in Lucid!) so check out all our packages before proceeding.

To add the WebUpd8 PPA to your sources.list, simply paste the following command in a terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8

Then to install the latest gThumb in Ubuntu:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gthumb

VLC 1.1.0 And gThumb 2.11.x Updated In The Web Upd8 PPA

VLC 1.1.0 and gThumb 2.11.x, both from GIT, have been available for some time in the WebUpd8 PPA and both applications got an update recently (today for VLC and two days ago for gThumb). In this post just I wanted to remind you about the WebUpd8 PPA and also about the great features this two apps have compared to their stable releases.

vlc 1.1.0 git

VLC 1.1.0 has a lot of new features and bug fixes, but probably the most important new feature compared to the stable version is the new extensions support. Because the complete list of changes was huge, I didn't put it here, but on Paste.bin.

gthumb 2.11.1

gThumb 2.11.1 gained an audio/video player and the ability to take a screenshot of the current video, Picasa Web support (import and export), added a "convert format", a "change date" and "resize image" tools and a lot of other new features and plugins. A complete (well, almost) list of changes can be found HERE.

Update: These VLC installation instructions are no longer valid! See: How To Install VLC 1.1.0 (Final) In Ubuntu From A PPA (deb)

Before adding the Web Upd8 PPA, remember these are experimental builds so there will be bugs!

To add the WebUpd8 PPA (available for Ubuntu Karmic and Lucid), paste this in a terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8

To upgrade (if you already have VLC and gThumb installed):
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Or to install vlc and ghtumb:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install vlc gthumb x264

Note: you need to remove any previous gThumb versions before installing the above .deb packages:
sudo apt-get remove --purge gthumb gthumb-data

And a final note for everyone trying to compile VLC 1.1.0 these days and encountering the same error as I did (which gave me a bit of a headache so I want to share it with anyone having the same issue). There's a bug for over a week now, which results in this error:

LUAC lua/intf/rc.luac
/bin/bash: -o: command not found
make[3]: *** [lua/intf/rc.luac] Error 127

You can fix it with:
cd share
for f in `find . | grep '\.lua$'`; do f2=`echo $f | sed 's/lua$/luac/g'`; ln -sf `basename $f` $f2; done

where "share" is the share folder in the vlc source folder (thanks to Akrog for the fix).

Latest gThumb Dev Build (2.11.x) Adds PicasaWeb Support [Ubuntu .deb Downloads Included]

gthumb 2.11.1

F-Spot is an almost complete photo management application but has a problem (according to many people): it uses MONO. An advantage over similar tools like gThumb is the option to upload to PicasaWeb or Flickr. For the stable version of gThumb (2.10) that is, because the latest development version of gThumb (2.11.x) has already gained PicasaWeb support (not Flickr support for now though)!

If you want to try the latest gThumb, don't worry about having to compile it from GIT because you can simply install it from the Web Upd8 PPA with just a few clicks / commands (and to think it took me nearly 3 hours to update the original debian config files). Unfortunately, only for Ubuntu Karmic and Lucid users.

Before installing, remember this is an unstable gThumb version, so expect to find bugs!

To install the latest gThumb 2.11.1 from WebUpd8 Launchpad PPA you have 2 choices

1. Add the PPA (but remember there are lots of experimental packages, so only do this if you want the GIT versions of VLC, etc.):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8

and to install gThumb:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gthumb
or upgrade:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

2. Simply download the latest gThumb from Web Upd8 PPA:

Ubuntu Karmic

32bit:
64bit:

Ubuntu Lucid:

32bit:
64bit:

Note: you need to remove any previous gThumb versions before installing the above .deb packages:
sudo apt-get remove --purge gthumb gthumb-data

Once installed, you will find gThumb under Applications > Graphics.

To upload to PicasaWeb, you firstly have to enable the Picasa plugin which you will find under Edit > Extensions:

ghtumb 2.11.1

You can then start uploading your photos to PicasaWeb by selecting Files > Export To > Picasa Web Album:

gthumb picasaweb

Want to compile gThumb on your own? No problem, you will find exact instructions HERE.

Special thanks to Frederic Bezies for it's post on gThumb.
