Widelands (RTS Game): An Open Source Settlers I & II Remake

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Widelands is an open source (works on Windows, Linux and Mac OSX) real-time strategy game, built upon the SDL and other open source libraries. If you knew Settlers I & II (© Bluebyte), then you already have a rough idea what Widelands is all about because Widelands is heavily inspired by those two games.

It has single-player, network, internet multiplayer modes and single player campaign missions. Players may select one of three different tribes. Widelands provides two tutorial missions. Advanced players can create their own maps with the included map editor and it is also possible to import and play original Settlers II maps.

Widelands Gameplay

In Widelands, you must build the economic infrastructure and manage the construction of roads in order for you to expand and go to war.

One of the most important aspects of Widelands is the road system. A well optimized road system keeps goods moving, which means people can train and equip troops faster.

Some resources in Widelands are renewable, but require specific workers(such as rangers or foresters) to ensure that these resources don't disappear. However, some resources are of limited quantity. Once they're used up, they're gone forever.

Expansion of territory is done by the construction of military buildings and filling them with soldiers. The bigger the military building is, the more territory it will control.

The video is pretty old but it should give you an idea on Widelands:

For Ubuntu, install it using the following command:
sudo apt-get install widelands

Note for Ubuntu Jaunty (or older) users: the version in the Ubuntu repositories might not start for you. If that's the case for you, then you should use the version provided the the Widelands download page - link at the end of the post (also install the packages mentioned there). There is also an Ubuntu PPA available (unofficial) which contains the latest Widelands build.

To add this repository for Ubuntu Jaunty, open a terminal and paste the following:
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/gabriel-rota/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list"
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys CA0C38EA

Then:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install widelands

Ubuntu Karmic Koala: Widelands build 13 which is available in the repos works just fine (I tested it). However, if you wish to install the latest version from an unofficial PPA (I did not test this version), open a terminal and paste the following command:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gabriel-rota/ppa

And to install it:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install widelands

Download Widelands for Windows, Linux and Mac OSX.
