Combined Desktop And App Switcher Gnome Panel Applet

desktop app switcher gnome linux

Desktop / App Switcher is a simple Gnome panel applet, which just like Talika or DockBarX, it displays the currently opened windows as icons, but Desktop / App Switcher has something extra: you can see the desktop on which the applications are opened. It's basically both a desktop and app switcher combined.

However, "Desktop / App Switcher" still needs some work; for example, it doesn't inherit the panel color (at least it didn't in my test) and there is no option to configure it in any way. Other than that, it works great.

Installing Desktop / App Switcher:

Firstly, you have to install python-wnck. In Ubuntu, simply run this in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install python-wnck

Getting Desktop / App Switcher: go to Le Roux Bodenstein blog and download both switcher.py and switcher_applet.server. Then use the terminal to navigate to the folder where you downloaded both files and run these commands:
sudo mv switcher.py /usr/bin/
chmod +x /usr/bin/switcher.py
sudo mv switcher_applet.server /usr/lib/bonobo/servers/

Then, refresh your Gnome Panel:
sudo killall gnome-panel

and you should then see the "Desktop/App Switcher" applet when right clicking the Gnome Panel and selecting "Add to panel".

Update: there is now an Ubuntu .deb file available for easy installation. Download it from HERE.
