Install Rhythmbox From Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat In Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx [Rhythmbox Backports PPA]

rhythmbox

Once a final version of Ubuntu is out, users only receive security updates so for upgrading to newer versions (not just for security), Ubuntu users must rely on PPAs (and GetDeb). For this reason, we'll be backporting some applications from Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.

What is backporting? Basically we take the package from Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and without modifying anything (almost - sometimes it requires a few minor tweaks), we're uploading it to a PPA so that package builds against the Ubuntu 10.04 libraries so it can be installed by Lucid users. This means that if you encounter any bugs, report them upstream as we have nothing to do with it =). You can always go back to the original Rhythmbox version using PPA Purge (see the end of the post).

The first such package is Rhythmbox, which we've uploaded to a PPA we'll be updating with Rhythmbox backports. There's no new stable Rhythmbox version in Maverick, so the PPA comes with a GIT snapshot for now but which fixes lots of bugs (and comes with a new icon and so on).

Please note that I had to remove a plugin for MPRIS D-Bus spec because:

This is a new hidden plugin, enabled by default, using GDBus. As a result, it is only built when glib 2.26 or newer is available.

So this wouldn't build for Lucid since Lucid has glib 2.24.

When new Rhythmbox versions will be uploaded to Maverick, you should get an update using our Rhythmbox PPA for Lucid.

To add the Rhythmbox backports PPA and upgrade to the latest Rhythmbox, simply paste this in a terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/rhythmbox && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

If you want to go back to the official Rhythmbox package from the Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx repositories, simply use PPA Purge (which is also available in the WebUpd8 PPA).
