Install Firefox 3.6 In Ubuntu Using A PPA Repository (.deb)

firefox 3.6 ubuntu

I was telling you about my issues with scrolling in Firefox (see #6). Well, I didn't manage to fix that for Firefox 3.5 but instead, I installed Firefox 3.6 beta (at the time I wrote the post) (Namoroka) and the scrolling now works perfectly (thanks to Tinhed for the tip!). Also, basically everything feels a lot faster, at least in Ubuntu. This is why I suggest you upgrade to Firefox 3.6.

Having second thoughts because you think your favourite Firefox extensions will not work with Firefox 3.6? I use about 40 add-ons and they all work, all you need to do is tweak FF a little (read about: making extensions compatible with any Firefox version).

Note: Tab Mix Plus users, install THIS version.

Before installing: remember, this is just beta so expect some bugs. The Firefox version in this PPA should be updated to 3.6 final, today - 21.01.2009. If you are now convinced to upgrade to Firefox 3.6, here's what you need to do to install it in Ubuntu. Open a terminal and paste the following commands (please note: if you used the Ubuntu Mozilla Daily repository to install Firefox 3.5, you should already have the PPA added to your Software Sources):

1. Add the Ubuntu Mozilla Daily PPA:

-Ubuntu Karmic:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa

-Older Ubuntu versions:
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/ubuntu UBUNTU_VERSION main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list"
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 247510BE

In the first command above, replace UBUNTU_VERSION in the line above with jaunty, intrepid or hardy, depending on your Ubuntu version.

Or use the automatic Launchpad PPA script to add the GPG key.

2. Install Firefox 3.6:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install firefox-3.6

You will then find Firefox 3.6 (Namoroka), under Applications > Internet > Namoroka Web Browser.

Update 22 January, 2010: It seems there's an error with the latest Firefox 3.6 and AppArmor (permission issues). See a fix, HERE.
