FreeDC++ Is A Fork Of LinuxDC++ With Many Useful Changes

In the same PPA as EiskaltDC++ there's another, some might consider better Direct Connect client for Linux called FreeDC++.

FreeDC++ is a fork of LinuxDC++ with many useful changes - which make it a great replacement for StrongDC and other such Windows Direct Connect clients.

The most important features are: Magnet links support, themes (including smileys), animated status icon and of course, all the other features you would expect in a Direct Connect client.

Install FreeDC++ in Ubuntu

Like I told you, FreeDC++ comes in the same PPA as EiskaltDC++. To add the PPA, paste this in a terminal:

-Ubuntu Lucid and Karmic:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tehnick/tehnick

-Ubuntu Hardy, Intrepid and Jaunty:

sudo bash -c "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/tehnick/tehnick/ubuntu UBUNTU_VERSION main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list"
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 3F6729E2

Replacing UBUNTU_VERSION with hardy, intrepid or jaunty.

Then, you can either install FreeDC++ stable:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install freedcpp freedcpp-example-theme freedcpp-mediapack 

or unstable:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install eiskaltdcpp-unstable freedcpp-example-theme freedcpp-mediapack 

I can't really say which is better, FreeDC++ or EiskaltDC++, however I can tell you that I've noticed EiskaltDC++ using a bit less system resources while FreeDC++ is more like the DC++ client for Windows. But of these 2 DC clients are great, so you decide which is better!
