Parcellite Has A New Developer (And A New Version); ClipIt - Parcellite Fork With Ubuntu AppIndicator Support

Parcellite

The Parcellite (one of the best Linux clipboard managers) development stopped a while back and for a year there were no new versions. But Vladi pointed out in a comment that a new developer took over the project back in December and a new version has already been released: 0.9.3.

Changes in Parcellite 0.9.3 (released December 20, 2010):
  • Fixed 100% CPU bug that occurs with certain clipboard data.
  • Fixed list not staying at the top of the list.
  • Added patch that corrects clipboard losing text data when app closes (Thanks, sarahstrong).
  • Added more man page information.

As you can see, there are only bug fixes for now, but it seems Parcellite will also get new features soon:

I am still going through the bug reports, patches, and feature requests. Pending means I’m evaluating/testing/validating, and there’s a good chance it will make it into the next release.

Because such a great application needs an easy way to be installed, I've created a PPA for Parcellite so Ubuntu (Karmic, Lucid and Maverick) users can easily install the latest version. Add the PPA and install Parcellite 0.9.3 using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/parcellite
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install parcellite

Parcellite with Ubuntu AppIndicator? ClipIt!

ClipIt

Parcellite doesn't have Ubuntu indicator support but for that you can use ClipIt, a Parcellite fork that uses an Ubuntu appindicator and also comes with some other fixes and improvements. The recent changes in Parcellite 0.9.3 have also been included in ClipIt.

To install ClipIt in Ubuntu, use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:shantzu/clipit
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install clipit

Thanks to Vladi for both the Parcellite and ClipIt tips!

Diodon: A Lightweight Clipboard Manager With Ubuntu Indicator Applet Support

Diodon clipboard manager

Diodon is a lightweight clipboard manager for Linux written in Vala which "aims to be the best integrated clipboard manager for the Gnome/GTK+ desktop". It doesn't have as many features as Glippy, Pastie and so on but it's a lot lighter and only uses around 2.7 mb of RAM on my system.

Diodon features include Ubuntu indicator, clipboard sync (primary selection and Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V clipboard) and an option to set the clipboard size.

Install Diodon clipboard manager in Ubuntu

Diodon comes with two PPAs: stable and daily builds. To add the stable PPA and install Diodon in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat (the PPA doesn't have packages for other Ubuntu versions), use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:diodon-team/stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install diodon

If you like bleeding-edge software, you can find the daily builds PPA HERE.

Diodon is very new so you may find bugs; report them @ Launchpad.

Thanks to Garry for the tip!

Glippy Clipboard Manager Can Now Upload Images To Imgur

Glippy clipboard manager

Glippy is a clipboard manager for the Gnome desktop. Some of its main features are: Ubuntu appindicator support, it can store test from both keyboard and mouse (select some text using your mouse and it will be available in Glippy), you can easily access the keboard using a hotkey (CTRL + SUPER + C by default, but it can be customized).

Glippy upload image imgur

A while back, Glippy got an option to upload the stored text to PasteBin and Image clips to Imgur. But back then, it only worked for special GTK image clipboard, used for example in GIMP or when selecting part of image or "Copy image" in Firefox/Opera. But starting today, this was further improved and you can now copy any image from your computer and select "Copy" (in Nautilus for example) and you'll then be able to upload it to Imgur via Glippy.

Install Glippy in Ubuntu

To add the Glippy PPA and install it in Ubuntu (10.04 and 10.10 only!), run the following commands in a terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bikooo/glippy
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install glippy glippy-indicator

The Glippy PPA also provides Ubuntu monochrome icons so Glippy will integrate perfectly with the Ubuntu desktop (default icon theme). Install the Glippy Ubuntu Mono icons using the following command:
sudo apt-get install glippy-ubuntu-mono

For another great Linux clipboard manager, check out Pastie (it has any file type copy history support).

Poll Results: Best Linux Clipboard Manager

The best Linux clipboard manager poll ended yesterday. There is no surprise concerning the winner: Parcellite won the poll with 287 votes (44.15%).

Here are the exact poll results:

best linux clipboard manager

Even though Parcellite is the clear winner, I am sure Pastie or Glippy will soon pass it in popularity as Parcellite is no longer maintained. Anamnesis is also already very insteresting too (it wasn't in the poll as it's very new) - and all these 3 clipboard managers get new features very quickly: Pastie already has an Anamnesis-like feature in which you can open a floating clipboard using a clipboard shortcut, Glippy got upload support for text as well as images and so on.

The number of votes was also surprisingly low compared to our other polls which means there aren't many people who use a clipboard manager. But I'm sure that once you've tried one, you'll see how useful it is - you may not need it all of the time, but it just sits in the notification area / appindicator using very low system memory and comes in very handy when you'll need it.

Up next: I'm not sure about our next poll but as usual, you can suggest a poll in the comments (make sure we didn't have it already)!

Anamnesis - A New Linux Clipboard Manager With Full-Text Search

Anamnesis

Anamnesis is a new clipboard manager for Linux designed to be very easy to use by providing a simple interface with full-text search.

Anamnesis can be used both via command line and with a GUI. It doesn't come with a notification area icon / appindicator and can only be triggered by using a keyboard shortcut - but as I've read in the comments to our "Best Linux Clipboard Manager" post, a lot of you want this feature in a clipboard manager. If so, maybe Anamnesis is what you're looking for!

Install Anamnesis

1. To install Anamnesis, download the archive from Sourceforge and extract it somewhere (like in your home folder). Then open a terminal and paste this:

sudo ln -s /path/to/anamnesis.py /usr/local/bin/anamnesis

where "/path/to/anamnesis.py" is the exact path to the "anamnesis.py file which comes in the archive you've extracted above. If you've extracted Anamnesis in your home folder, that would be: ~/anamnesis-1.0.0/anamnesis.py

2. Now you can start Anamnesis by typing this in a terminal:
anamnesis --start

You won't see anything just yet, as you've only started the Anamnesis command line interface. To have Anamnesis start on session start-up, go to System > Preferences > Startup Applications and add a new startup item and in the command field, enter: "anamnesis --start" (without the quotes).

3. Now we'll have to create a new keyboard shortcut to start the Anamnesis GUI. Go to System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts, click on "Add", then under "Name" enter: "Anamnesis" and under command, enter: "anamnesis --browser" (without the quotes). Click Apply and scroll down and you should see Anamnesis at the bottom - assign it a keyboard shortcut (like Ctrl+Alt+C or anything you like).

Now whenever you want to access Anamnesis, press the keyboard shortcut you've assigned for it in step 3.

If you want to use Anamnesis via command line, see the README inside the downloaded anamnesis archive.

Thanks to fabiowguerra for the tip!

Pastie 0.5.2 (Stable) With Any File Type Copy History Support Now Available In Its PPA [Linux Clipboard Manager]

pastie

Like we told you a while back, Pastie - a simple clipboard manager that makes use of the AppIndicator in Ubuntu - got an amazing new feature: it can now keep track of any file type (including images) as you can see in the screenshot above.

But that was a testing version only, which is now all grown up and available in the Pastie official PPA.

The version in the PPA also fixes an important memory leak bug in the testing version we posted a while back so it's important to upgrade to this version!

Other new features Pastie 0.5.2 (stable) since the last stable version:
  • it's very easy to use a custom icon for Pastie: simply place the icon you want Pastie to use in the ~/.pastie/ folder. The icon must be renamed to "pastie.svg" ("svg" can be any other kind of usable type of image). You can find an Elementary icon here, and mono icons here.
  • you can launch the Pastie preferences dialog using a keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Alt + P.

pastie preferences

As you can see, there are no new features compared to the testing Pastie 0.5 version, but like I said, it is highly recommended you add the PPA and upgrade to the latest Pastie!

Update: yet another update came to Pastie this morning, modifying the way the files are displayed: the file is now placed at the beginning of the row, with the path following it. Also, the files have an icon so you can easily distinguish between copied files and text:

Pastie

Install Pastie 0.5.2 in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hel-sheep/pastie && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install pastie

An "apt-get upgrade" is required because the Pastie PPA now comes with an updated indicator-application package which brings some improvements to the memory leak issue in Pastie (which seems to be related to the indicator-application package).

Pastie (Simple Clipboard Manager) 0.5 Gets Image / Any File Support - Test It Now

Pastie

Not so long ago, we were telling you about Pastie, a simple clipboard manager with Indicator Applet support. Since our first Pastie mention, it got an Ubuntu PPA and lots of versions released - which fixed bugs mostly, but a new feature was also added: a configuration dialog you can open by pressing "Ctrl + Alt + p".

Image support was probably the most requested feature back when we posted about Pastie. Well, Pastie got even better than that! Today, Pastie 0.5-pre is available (only Ubuntu .deb download for now - but it will be available in its PPA after some further testing) which doesn't get just image but any file support meaning Pastie will remember the files you've copied like you can see in the screenshot above. Pastie even remembers pieces of image you copy in GIMP or other image editing applications.

It is also a lot easier to change the Pastie icon, like Felipe (Pastie developer) points out on his blog: simply place the icon you want Pastie to use in the ~/.pastie/ folder. The icon must be renamed to "pastie.svg" ("svg" can be any other kind of usable type of image). A nice monochrome icon for Pastie can be downloaded from HERE.

Download Pastie 0.5-pre Ubuntu .deb (for both 32bit and 64bit)

Thanks to Felipe!

Pastie Gets An Ubuntu PPA

pastie

Pastie, the simple Linux clipboard manager we were telling you about yesterday got a PPA so you can stay up to date with the latest versions:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hel-sheep/pastie && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install pastie

Along with the PPA, a new version has been released which brings some bug fixes.

Pastie - Very Simple Clipboard Manager With Application Indicator Support [Ubuntu]

pastie

Using a clipboard manager in Linux is a must for most people because of a very old bug: if you copy something from one application, then close it and try to paste the copied text - it doesn't work.

Pastie is a very simple Linux clipboard manager with Application Indicator support so it will fit perfectly into your Ubuntu desktop.

The source code is available @ Github and there's a .deb file available for download too.

Update 1: There is now a PPA available for Pastie:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hel-sheep/pastie && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install pastie

Once you install Pastie, run it by going to Applications > Accessories.

For a more advanced Linux clipboard manager, see Parcellite.

Update 2: to use a monochrome icon for Pastie (thanks to bungh0l3!), download THIS Parcellite icon, then extact the archive (you'll need 7zip), and place the gtk-paste.svg icon in /usr/share/icons/Humanity/status/24 (it requires you run Nautilus with gksu). If you want to use the dark icon (for a light panel), rename it to gtk-paste.svg and place it in the same folder mentioned above.

Then you need to log out and log back in! If that doesn't work, update the icons cache with:
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -f /usr/share/icons/ICON_THEME

Where "ICON_THEME" is the icon theme for which you installed the new icon.

Here's how it looks using the Elementary icons:

Parcellite clipboard manager

Parcellite is a stripped down, basic-features-only Linux clipboard manager with a small memory footprint. Parcellite features include a clipboard history, various options to display items the way you like it, daemon mode, global hotkeys to display clipboard content quickly and perform custom commands using the clipboard contents.

The new version includes new translations:

+ Danish translation (by Kim Jensen).
+ Czech translation (by Miloš Koutný).
+ French translation (by Vincent Coiffier).
+ Romanian translation (by Ovidiu D. Niţan).

And changes:

+ Modified action execution code.
+ Removed dependency on pthreads.

+ Use accessor functions instead direct access (by Javier Jardon).
+ Add missing include statements to silence gcc warnings (by Ludwig Nussel).
+ Clipboard sync cannot be enabled unless both copy and primary are enabled.
+ Empty clipboard and primary recovery no longer overwrites contents of other types.
+ Removes newline characters (’\n’) from the history menu entries (by Daniel Di Marco).

Download and install Parcellite

Ubuntu users can easily install Parcellite via GetDeb.

ClipMon: Smart Clipboard Application For Windows

clipmonClipboard Monitor (or ClipMon) is one of those smart applications such as Blaze which are build with usability in mind and try to automatically make the action you were about to do yourself.

ClipMon is a clipboard application which allows you to define custom actions based on the text on the clipboard. For example, if you copy an URL, ClipMon will automatically detect what you are copying and open a web browser poiting to the URL you just copied. If you copy an email address, it will offer to open your default email client and open the compose window. And... you got the idea.

ClipMon works on Windows XP and Vista and it's free and portable!
