New SopCast Player PPA Comes With Fixed Packages For Ubuntu 10.10

Roberto @ LFFL created a new SopCast PPA (he already had SopCast packages in a different PPA along with some other packages - for Lucid only) for Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat so you no longer have to manually download .deb files and apply a fix to get Sopcast player to start.

To add the SopCast PPA and install Sopcast Player in Ubuntu 10.10, use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ferramroberto/sopcast
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install sopcast-player

The above PPA also has packages for Ubuntu 10.04, but SopCast won't work if you're using VLC 1.1.x.

Note: I've using Ubuntu 32bit so I've only tested the 32bit packages and I do not know if it works for 64bit (this is because the instructions in our previous SopCast post only seemed to work on 32bit).

The new Sopcast version however still has one of the bugs I was telling you about: "show controls" and fullscreen don't work. To fix this too, in the Preferences, on the "Player" tab, select "Use External Player" and under "Command" enter "vlc" (without the quotes).

Foobnix: A Very Interesting New Local And Online Music Player For Linux

Foobnix is a brand new Linux music player designed to be minimal and for both local and online music.

What I instantly liked about it is the online music search feature - Foobnix downloads and plays music from Vkontakte (a Russian website, I for one never heard of it) and in my tests it was able to find any band I could think of (this includes some Romanian bands such as E.m.i.l. which I was sure it wouldn't find - but it did). Also, this service uses port 80 so if you have some ports blocked, it will still work. I'm not sure how legal this is, but it's an amazing feature!

Besides this online music search feature, Foobnix also comes with a lot of radio stations integrated by default (around 3500), Last.fm support, lyrics and a few other minor features.

The interface is also very interesting: the player controls and song progress bar are displayed next to the menu which give a touch of minimalism, uniqueness and appealing visuals to this new audio player.

But back to the online music feature: you can enable it by going to View > View Search Panel. You can also enable a related artists, similar songs, similar tags and album artwork by going to View > View Info Panel. Here, you can click any similar artist or similar song (info retrieved via Last.fm) and it will instantly play in Foobnix.

Unfortunately, Foobnix doesn't come with an AppIndicator, but it's approach to the notification area is quite interesting: right clicking the Foobnix notification area icon brings up a small control window:

Overall, Foobnix is a very interesting and promising music player with an unique interface which still needs a bit of work but is already usable.

Update: if the web music feature stops working, you can fix it by running the following command (will reset Foobnix!):

rm -r ~/.config/foobnix

Download Foobnix (Ubuntu .deb for both 32bit and 64bit included).

Listen To Internet Radio In Ubuntu Using Tunapie (Shoutcast, Icecast)

Now that VLC (1.1.0) doesn't come with the huge Internet radio list it used to, we must search for alternatives. I've tested a few and TunaPie seems the best I've tried so far. It is compatible with the Icecast directory as well as the Shoutcast (winamp) stream directory service. Further more, Tunapie can even play TV streams and also allows you to record both audio and video streams using streamripper.

You can even use it with your favourite audio/video player. To set this (it's a must if you don't have Xmms installed), once you install Tunapie, go to File > Preferences and under Video and Audio player, enter the player you want. For example, I've entered: "vlc" for both.

Tunapie is available in the official Ubuntu repositories. Install it by searching for Tunapie in the Ubuntu Software Center or use the following command:

sudo apt-get install tunapie

Linux SopCast Player 0.4.1 Released - P2P Application For Watching TV Online [Ubuntu PPA With libstdc++5 Included]

SopCast Player is a Linux GUI front-end for the p2p streaming technology developed by SopCast. SopCast can play various TV channels online (watch football games, HBO, AXN Movie and so on) for free. Besides the default channel list, you can find many more (local or international) channels by simply searching Google.

Like we told you a while back, SopCast is probably the best way to watch the World Cup online under Linux - there are many channels and being a p2p streaming application, the connection usually doesn't goes down.

SopCast Player 0.4.1 has just been released, bringing a minor update to the user interface and deleted link handling in Firefox as well as other bug fixes.

The PPA has also been updated and it now includes lib32stdc++5 and libstdc++5, packages which up until now you had to manually download and install.

To install the latest SopCast Player 0.4.1 in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx only, simply paste this in a terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ferramroberto/extra && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install sopcast-player sp-auth

And a reminder: SopCast Player requires VLC < 1.1.0 (so you must have VLC version lower than 1.1.0 installed before installing SopCast Player). You can use PPA Purge to remove VLC 1.1.0 installed from a PPA and go back to the default VLC 1.0.x from the official Ubuntu repositories - all automatically.

Also, don't rely on the default channels only. Search Google as you'll find a lot more channels!

How To Get A Free Spotify Invite (For Any Supported Country)

In case you don't know, Spotify is a new service (free or premium) which allows you to listen to music on your computer, mobile phone (iPhone, Android), create playlists and a lot more.

Spotify introduced invites for most of the countries it is available for. But there is a way to get an invite quickly and free (thanks to kimme!). Read on!

Jelli Online Radio Lets Users Pick Their Own Music [Social Radio]

Jelli is a really nice concept for social music: it is an online radio station for which the users decide which songs get added to any of the stations and the music being played is based on these "votes" by all the users online. To listen to a station, all you have to do is add the .m3u playlist to any music/media player such as VLC, etc. The website also comes with a chat for each radio stations, meaning it has basically every feature a social web radio needs.

But there is a downside: the colours and the overall website aspect looks pretty awful and seems designed for teens but if you only care about the music, you will love Jelli.

Tivion is a Linux application for watching TV online for free. Tivion is a Linux application for watching TV on-line for free, which comes 78 channels from Spain, Argentina, United Kingdom and Russia.

Many TV channels are in TS, a video format used to store video on DVDs using MPEG video compression. This has it's advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that you will receive an HD (High Definition) signal quality and the disadvantage is that MPlayer will need a few extra seconds to convert it to MPEG and for caching. Therefore, if a TV channel doesn't start playing right away, don't think it's broken or that something is wrong, it just takes a while until the channel will start playing (5-30 seconds usually).

The TV channels included:
-UK: Eurosport 2, BCC 1, 2 etc., Channel 4 and 5, ITV 4, Film 4, Zone Horror, Sky News and many others
-Argentina: Arco Iris TV, Canal 11 and 13, Canal Luz Satelite
-Spain: TVE, CNN+, TV Canaria, Velevisa, Videncia, Fuego TV, Neox 8, Nova, 24 horas and others.

Installation

Tivion needs PyGTK 2.16 which is available in Ubuntu Karmic Koala, but if you use Jaunty, you will need to install it from Karmic repositories or compile it.

Once installed, you will find Tivion under Applications > Internet.

(If you downloaded another version, simply change the file name in the commands above)

Then, to run it:

livestation

Upon running the application, you will be asked your username and password. Enter those and you are done!
