First Opera 11.10 "Barracuda" Dev Snapshot Available For Download

Opera 11.10 Linux screenshot

Earlier this week, the Opera Desktop Team announced Opera 11 "Barracuda" which they say it will bring "another popular Opera feature will be taken to the next level".

Well, the first Opera 11.10 "Barracuda" development snapshot was made available for download on the Opera Desktop Team blog today. For now, the mysterious new feature is not available but considering the fast development Opera has been undergoing lately, I'm sure we'll see it soon enough.

The Opera 11.10 snapshot comes with Web Open Font Format (WOFF) support and a few other minor new features as well as a huge list of bug fixes but that's mostly it. Since this is a development build, there are also things that don't work yet: there's no HTML5 playback on Mac, the Acid 3 reference rendering is broken and tabs opened by extensions open to the left instead of the right.

Check out the announcement and download Opera 11.10 Barracuda development build from the Opera Desktop Team blog (.deb files included).

Opera 11 (Stable) Released With Extension Support, Tab Stacking, Visual Mouse Gestures And More

Opera 11 Ubuntu

Opera 11 has finally been released! You probably already know what's new in the latest version of this amazing web browser, but let's recap the major new features:

Extension support: this was probably the only feature that Opera was missing for many of us (even though a lot of features for which you must use an extension on other browsers were there by default in Opera). The extensions work just like in Chromium: an icon is displayed next to the search bar (or no icon at all) and you also get an extensions page from where you can disable or uninstall the extensions (to reach this page you either have to right click any extension and select "Manage Extensions" or press Ctrl + Shift + E). You can check out the Opera extensions @ https://addons.opera.com/

Tab Stacking: yet another innovative feature from Opera, designed for those who like to keep a lot of tabs open. Tab Stacking groups multiple tabs into one tab which can then be extended with just one click. To create a stack you must drag and drop a tab onto another tab. Hovering a stack gives you a visual overview on what's inside that stack. And you can of course expand and colapse the stacks with a click. We've covered Tab Stacking (including a video) HERE.

Visual mouse gestures (mouse gestures is another genuine Opera innovation that was first introduced in Opera 5.1 in April 2001) is a face-lift to the original Opera mouse gestures: for a visual guide to mouse gestures, simply long press the right mouse button.

Opera 11 Beta Released With Tab Stacking

Opera 11 beta - tab stacking

After adding a new address field, visual mouse gestures and an updated mail panel last week, Opera 11 beta has been released today with yet another innovation: tab stacking.

To get an idea on what tab stacking is, I've recorded a video you can watch below:

To create a stack you must drag and drop a tab onto another tab. Hovering a stack gives you a visual overview on what's inside that stack. And you can of course expand and colapse the stacks with a click.

Tab stacking is designed for those who like having a lot of tabs open in their browser and it can be used to stack different tasks, create stacks just for freeing up some space on the tab bar, or just stack some tabs because you need them later and don't want to bookmark them (that's what I always do).

Tab stacking seems to be Opera's reponse to the Panorama (initially called Tab Candy) introduced in Firefox 4.0. It will be interesting to see if Chrome will add an easy way of organizing the tabs too and if they will copy Firefox / Opera or come up with an original idea.

Opera 11 Alpha With Extensions Support Is Available For Download

Opera 11 extensions

That was fast! Just last week we were telling you about Opera getting extensions support and today, Opera 11 alpha has been released. The extensions work just like in Chromium: an icon is displayed next to the search bar (or no icon at all) and you also get an extensions page from where you can disable or uninstall the extensions (to reach this page you either have to right click any extension and select "Manage Extensions" or press Ctrl + Shift + E).

There aren't many extensions available for now, but I'm sure we'll see a lot of them soon and since they seem to work just like in Chromium (they use HTML, CSS and JavaScript), we might even see Chromium extensions "ported" to Opera.

To try out the new extensions or submit your own, see https://addons.labs.opera.com/

Besides extensions support, Opera 11 alpha also comes with Opera Presto 2.6.37 which brings improved performance and other enhancements.

Opera 11 To Get Extensions Support

The Opera developers have just announced that Opera 11 will finally get extensions support. The announcement also states that porting extensions from other browsers (they are most probably referring to Chrome) will be very easy and the extensions will either display a new button in the browser UI or will run in the background without any UI element.

I don't know about you, but for me this is very exciting news as the extensions (even though opera offers a lot of functionality which you'll not find in other browsers by default) were the only thing that kept me from using Opera as my default web browser.

Alpha builds of Opera 11 will soon be available for download @
http://www.opera.com/browser/next/

For more info, read the announcement.

Opera 10.60 Has FINALLY Been Released For Linux, Windows And MacOS X

opera 10.60 final ubuntu screenshot

That's right, "FINALLY" as in screaming because it seems it took them forever (Opera 10.5x was not released for Linux at all - only alpha builds) to release Opera 10.60 for Linux.

Opera 10.60 was released today and this time it includes Linux too, besides the Windows and MacOS X builds.

Opera 10.60 comes with a new version of Opera's rendering engine: Presto 2.6.30 and includes HTML5 fixes such as Geolocation and Offline Applications as well as WebM support. Opera 10.60 is the first final version of a browser that comes with WebM support by default (that's what the Opera devs say, but I don't agree since Epiphany had WebM with no modifications to the browser whatsoever).

There are also lots of Javascript and DOM performance improvements and almost 1000 bugs fixed since Opera 10.54.

As for Opera 10.60 for Linux, this is the first Opera release with the new Javascript engine called Carakan which makes Opera the fastest browser today. But the major change in Opera 10.60 for Linux is that it no longer uses Qt and it now integrates with the KDE and GTK libraries. Opera 10.60 also comes with Opera Unite integrated by default.

Important: if you encounter any issues with the menus (such as black font on black background), crashes on close and so on, completely remove any Opera version and profile and then install Opera 10.60 final.

How is Opera 10.60 working for you? Let us know in the comments!

Opera 10.60 Beta Released (And It Finally Includes Linux Builds Too)

opera 10.60 beta linux

Opera 10.60 Beta has been released for Windows, Linux/FreeBSD and MacOS X. This is the first Linux beta ever since Opera started working on Opera 10.5x and 10.6x (so there were only alpha Opera 10.5x and 10.6x builds for Linux up until now).

This new builds add WebM, Geolocation, Web Workers, HTML5 offline Web Applications, Cross-Document Messaging update and many more. In addition to these new/improved features there are quite a few bug fixes for Linux/FreeBSD as well as performance and core updates.

This build is official (not just a daily snapshot) which means you can download Opera 10.60 beta from the Opera website (Ubuntu .deb included).

Opera 10.60 Alpha 1 Released (Linux Builds Included)

opera 10.60 linux

There won't be any stable Opera 10.5x for Linux because Opera already reached version 10.60 alpha 1. But there is some good news for the Linux users: Opera 10.60 aims to synchronize across all desktop platforms meaning that when the Windows stable build will be released, we'll also have a stable version for Linux and of course the Linux version will benefit from all the improvements since 10.5x.

Opera 10.60 comes with lots of improvements, including: speend optimizations (yes, even more speed!) for JavaScript, DOM and CSS, Speed Dial facelift, improvements to the menu (which now actually says "menu" so the users will know what the button in the top left corner actually does)

Download Chromium, Firefox And Opera WebM (VP8) Enabled Builds

webm vp8 youtube video

Both Firefox and Opera already released WebM (VP8) capable nightly builds which you can download from here:

To run Opera in Ubuntu, download the archive, extract it and double click the "opera" file. Then try out this video which already uses WebM (with VP8) - but don't forget to enable HTML5 for YouTube before watching the video.

Ubuntu users: if you want a WebM capable Chromium, add the Chromium daily PPA - the latest builds (as of 20 May) already have WebM support. Install it with:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chromium-daily/ppa && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install chromium-browser chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra
"chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra" is required by WebM it seems.

Note: Google Chrome (not Chromium) will be getting WebM support starting with May 24.

First Opera 10.5x Beta For Linux, Released!

opera 10.53 beta1 linux ubuntu

Ever since the Opera 10.5x development started, the Linux builds have been alpha. Today, the first beta version of Opera 10.5x (10.53) has been released!

The reason for this very big delay for the Linux builds is that there have been some major changes in how Opera works on Linux, most notably dropping Qt in favour of integrating Opera with the KDE and GTK libraries where possible.

With Opera 10.53 Beta for Linux, there is also a change in the license so we might see Opera in the official repositories of all major Linux distributions soon (hopefully):

The big change is that it should make it easier for distros to include us in their online repositories. Those of you who have followed my posts on this subject (in the 'My Opera' forums and a couple of distro specific sites) will know that I have been trying to get us to find a way to make it easier for distros to redistribute Opera. The latest EULA is as a result of some of that internal discussion.

Opera 10.52 For Windows And Mac OS X Released, Linux Still Alpha

opera 10.5x linux

Looking for Opera 10.5x for Linux? Unfortunately the Linux version is still alpha, even though the Opera team released Opera 10.52 for Windows and Mac OS X today.

However, there is still some good news for Linux users. The Opera Next page says:

Opera 10.5x for Windows reached final quality in March and Mac followed in April. We are now progressing towards the final version for Linux.

So now at least we know the Opera developers are finally concentrating on the Linux version which means we could have Opera 10.5x for Linux sometime around the end of May (according to some comments on the Opera Blog).

More info on the Windows and Mac OS X release, HERE.

You can download Opera 10.52 for Windows and Mac OS X from the Opera download page. The latest Linux builds (including Ubuntu .deb; rpm files are also available) are available @ http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/snapshot-6325/

Finally Opera 10.51 .deb And .rpm Linux Packages

opera 10.51 linux screenshot

Ever since the Opera team started working on the new Opera 10.50 / 10.51, there were no .deb or .rpm packages but this finally changed and you can now install Opera 10.50/10.51 in Debian (and derivates like Ubuntu, etc.), Fedora, openSUSE and so on using .deb and .rpm packages.

Note: it is recommended you back up your your profile ('~/.opera') first to allow you to downgrade should you need to, because once installed Opera will use the default profile (rather than a testing profile).

The new build basically doesn't bring anything new other than native packages for the above mentioned Linux distributions.

Known issues:
  • Packaging: No desktop integration for users of old Desktop Environments on non deb/rpm distros
  • Packaging: Extra unneeded GTK libraries get installed on some distros
  • Packaging: Removal of 'prefix'/'DESTDIR' install script options
  • Font problems
  • Language input issues
  • No KDE integration (yet)
  • Problem with address field drop down position under non compositing Window Managers
  • Black drop down menus for some KDE3 users
  • Black border around Ctrl+Tab dialog when running under compositing Window Managers
  • Some command line options don't work

Remember: Opera 10.51 for Linux is still alpha!

Download Opera 10.51 build 62.52 .deb, .rpm and .tar.gz.

Opera 10.51 For Windows Released; New, 'Prettier' Linux Builds Available Too

opera 10.51 linux

While Opera 10.50 for Windows was released more then a week ago, Linux builds only get 'prettier'.

Today, Opera released yet a new snapshot for Windows, version 10.51, which fixes a lot of bugs, and also a new Linux build (also called 10.51 for some reason, even though 10.50 for Linux was not released) which doesn't fix anything related to rendering and so on but only looks pretty (or so they say).

Here is the Linux changelog:
  • Buttons in dialogs have the correct order for a GTK application
  • Improved GTK integration when using a dark themes
  • The default GTK fonts are now used for menus and dialogs
  • The default GTK colors are now used
  • Treeview GTK skin support
  • Panels use GTK native colors
  • Zoom button enabled on UNIX
  • Fixed an issue with the old menu appearing on top of the 'O' Menu

To download and run this new Opera snapshot in Linux, copy & paste the following commands in a terminal:

i386:
wget http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/snapshot-6248/opera-10.51-6248.i386.linux.tar.bz2 -O - | tar xjf -

Opera 10.50 For Windows Has Been Released

opera 10.50 linux

Finally, the new Opera 10.50 has been released - for Windows only for now. Opera 10.50 development had an incredible speed, the blog post stating that:

Our developers are rivalling Carakan for speed!

This most probably had something to do with the introduction of the so called browser ballot screen in Europe which can be a chance to increase the market share.

In case you don't know, Opera 10.50 introduces Carakan, a new, much faster javascript engine - the developers saying it's 700% faster then the previous Opera - as well as the new HTML5 <video> element. It also features a redesigned menu (as you can see in the screenshot in the beginning of the post) and other visual improvements. Opera 10.50 also comes with Opera Unite!

Other great features in Opera 10.50 are private browsing tabs (other browsers only support this in new windows) and Windows Vista and 7 jump lists, Aero Glass and Aero Peek.

The Linux version (which is still in alpha) doesn't rely on Qt anymore, but on any graphical toolkit installed (plain X11). The Opera team is focusing on getting support for Gnome/GTK+ and KDE4/Qt4 into 10.5.

Download: Opera 10.50 final for Windows | Latest Linux / Mac OS X builds

To run the latest Linux build (remember, it's still alpha!), you can either download it from the link above or run the following commands:

Yet Another Opera 10.50 Alpha Snapshot Released

opera 10.50 alpha

Opera devs seem to have really speed up the development, with lots of bugs fixed and a new snapshot released only one day after the last one. Opera 10.50 looks more and more polished and with it's amazing speed (since they introduced the Carakan javascript engine), it can become a real competitor for Firefox and Chrome (I wanted to say IE too, but that's a bundled competitor, not something people usually choose), specially on Linux where Opera finally ditched Qt. If only they would go open source...

The new snapshot brings more Windows fixes, but not only:

  • Facebook is working again
  • A new view button to the right on the status bar adds a zoom slider (Windows-only for now)
  • Work on tab management (MDI)
  • Skin fixes, such as a glow on the personal bar to make the text readable (Windows 7/Vista)
  • Stability fixes

For a full list of fixed bugs and download, see the post on the Opera Desktop Team blog (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X).

For Linux, you can simply run this to download and run the latest Opera 10.50 alpha snapshot:

32bit:
wget http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/snapshot-6204/opera-10.50-6204.linux.i386.tar.bz2 -O - | tar xjf -
cd opera-10.50-6204.linux.i386/
./opera &
64bit:
wget http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/snapshot-6204/opera-10.50-6204.linux.x86_64.tar.bz2 -O - | tar xjf -
cd opera-10.50-6204.linux.x86_64/
./opera &

New Opera 10.50 Alpha Builds, This Time For Linux Too

opera 10.50

Like you noticed if you are following the development of Opera 10.50, the Opera Browser is undertaking some massive changes to the platform integration that will give significant improvements for all three desktop platforms, but because of this, Windows users will have a beta version a lot earlier than the other 2 platforms (Windows and Mac).

Today's snapshot bring a lot of improvements and bugfixes, Linux builds (finally! they didn't release any for the last 2-3 Windows snapshots), and also the widgets will also run as standalone applications again as previewed in 10.20 alpha.

Other important improvements:
  • Upgraded Carakan engine
  • Search box enhancements
  • Bookmark fixes
  • Improved stability
  • Restructuring of the Opera menu

For a complete changelog and downloads, see the blog post on Opera Desktop Team blog.

Alternatively, Linux users can just run the following conmands to download and run the latest alpha build of Opera 10.50:

New Opera 10.50 Pre-Alpha Windows Build

opera 10.50 windows

Opera has released another pre-alpha build (3199) of it's brand new 10.50 version, which brings a slightly upgraded core rending engine, some more work on video support, improved performance and Windows 7 integration, fixed some crashes and others.

Unfortunately, there is no new Linux build for now, but Linux users will be happy to know that a new Linux build should come out later this week. Until then you can try out the previous Linux build.

Since this is a pre-alpha release, expect a lot of bugs! Still, the new Opera 10.50 looks and feels great so you should give it a try just to see why so many people say it's impressive (yes, me included =) ).

Opera 10.5 Pre-Alpha For Linux Now Available

opera 10.5 linux

Opera 10.5 pre-alpha for Linux is now available for download, as the Opera Blog points out.

Opera 10.5 pre-alpha for Linux doesn't rely on Qt anymore, but on any graphical toolkit installed (plain X11). The Opera team is focusing on getting support for Gnome/GTK+ and KDE4/Qt4 into 10.5:

opera 10.5 x11

Also, the new Opera is now using Carakan, a new, much faster javascript engine:

Carakan banchmark windows 7

Another new improvement in Opera 10.5 (for both Windows and Linux builds) is the HTML5 <video> element. Windows users don't have to install anything, while Linux users will need GStreamer for this to work.
