Firefox: Embedded PDFs With Evince (Using Mozplugger)

Evince embedded firefox

Mozplugger is a Firefox plugin that allows you to embed applications that handle various file types in Firefox.

In this post you'll see how to get embedded PDF files in Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 4 (I've tested it in both) - like in Google Chrome (sort of) - using Evince, the Ubuntu default PDF reader.

Get embedded PDF files in Firefox using Evince

1. Install Mozplugger. Ubuntu users can simply click the button below:

Or copy/paste the following command in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install mozplugger

2. Only for Ubuntu 10.10. In Ubuntu 11.04, it works without this step (and in fact it won't work if you apply this in Ubuntu 11.04): now you must edit the mozpluggerrc file. To do this, press ALT + F2 and enter:
gedit /home/YOUR_USERNAME/.mozilla/mozpluggerrc
(In the above command, replace "YOUR_USERNAME" with your username. No, using "~" doesn't work for the run dialog).

And in this file, paste the following:
application/pdf: pdf: PDF file
application/x-pdf: pdf: PDF file
text/pdf: pdf: PDF file
text/x-pdf: pdf: PDF file
application/x-postscript: ps: PostScript file
application/postscript: ps: PostScript file
repeat noisy swallow(evince) fill: evince "$file"
Now restart Firefox and try to open a PDF file. It should be embedded in Firefox using Evince if you've followed the steps correctly.

Thanks to hhlp @ AskUbuntu for the instructions.

Download Thunderbird 3.1 Ubuntu .DEB

If you found the Ubuntuzilla way of installing Thunderbird 3.1 in Ubuntu a bit too hard, here is a .deb file you can download and install Thunderbird 3.1 in Ubuntu.

Note: this is the unmodified Mozilla release binary of Thunderbird, packaged into a .deb by the Ubuntuzilla project. This means they were only able to package it for 32bit since Mozilla does not provide 64bit binaries.

Many thanks to WebUpd8 reader eMcE for the tip!

How To Install Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1 (Final) In Ubuntu

thunderbird 3.1 ubuntu

Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1 was just released featuring faster search, quick filter toolbar, better migration assistant and many other improvements. A complete list of what's new can be found @ Mozilla's website.

There is no PPA for Ubuntu providing the latest Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1 for now and there are no plans to push an update in the existing Ubuntu versions (that means Lucid too) like it happened with Firefox so the only way to install it is manually, or by using Ubuntuzilla (it works with any Ubuntu version).

So to install Thunderbird 3.1 in Ubuntu, firstly install Ubuntuzilla. You can download a .deb file from HERE.

Once Ubuntuzilla is installed successfully, to install Thunderbird 3.1, all you have to do is run the following command in a terminal:
ubuntuzilla.py -a install -p thunderbird

During the installation, Ubuntuzilla will ask you to choose the localization you want to install, so it will install Thunderbird 3.1 in your language!

If you used the manual method to install Thunderbird 3.1 we were telling you about not so long ago, then all you have to do is select "Check for updates" from the Thunderbird About menu.

Update: you can also download a Thunderbird 3.1 Ubuntu .DEB file!

Update 2: There is now a PPA repository for Thunderbird 3.1 available for Ubuntu (both 32bit and 64bit) users.

How To Install Firefox 3.7 (4.0) With WebM Support In Ubuntu Linux [PPA]

webm firefox 4.0

WebM is a new open source project suppored by Google, Mozilla, Opera and many others which uses the VP8 video codec Google aquired from On2 as well as Vorbis audio for HTML5 videos (HTML5 uses a built-in codec so you don't need Adobe Flash for viewing videos from YouTube for instance - which results in a very low processor usage compared to Flash and so on).

Firefox 3.7 (soon to be 4.0) got WebM support yesterday. The Ubuntu Mozilla Daily PPA for Ubuntu got this new builds so you can finally install Firefox with WebM support in Ubuntu - for 32bit only for now.

Besides WebM, Firefox 3.7 (4.0) from the Mozilla Daily PPA also features the new extension manager:

firefox 4.0 ubuntu

Please note that Firefox 3.7 is unstable so expect to find bugs! Also, this PPA will update your Firefox 3.6 to the nightly. If you don't want this, after installing Firefox 3.7, remove the PPA!

Install Firefox 3.7 (aka 4.0) in Ubuntu using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install firefox-3.7

Firefox too needs libvpx but for some reason, this is not available in the Ubuntu Mozilla Daily PPA. But you can install this from Chromium Daily PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chromium-daily/ppa
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install libvpx0

And there you have it - Firefox 3.7 (aka 4.0) with WebM support.

To use WebM on YouTube, enable HTML5 and try some WebM videos like this one. Note: for some reason I was unable to view videos in 360p using WebM, but the videos in 720p worked great.

Contacts: New, Experimental Firefox Addon Released By Mozilla

mozilla contacts firefox

Mozilla released an experimental Firefox addon called "Contacts" which allows you to import Twitter and Gmail contacts (for now) and the Mac OS X address book into Firefox. This is a first step for globalization (contacts-wise):

Why is this information important? Address books and buddy lists have become an integral part of how we manage our relationships online. Your email addresses, Twitter handle and openID are used in hundreds of ways as you connect, follow and share online.

Every desktop operating system, and hundreds of web-based service providers, has some way of representing “who-you-know”. Managing all of this information can be a lot of work. There are multiple copies of your data, and they are inconsistent and disjointed.

The new Contacts Firefox extension also supports Gravatars - meaning it will scan all your contacts for images they have on Gravatar and display them in your Firefox Contacts.

Contacts will probably be integrated into Mozilla Raindrop later on, to create a powerful social client which integrates all the web services into Firefox.

Known issues:

  • Gmail import requires that you have an active session with GMail.
  • Twitter import requires a saved Twitter username-password pair (i.e. saved with the Firefox Password Manager, by clicking “Remember” after logging into Twitter)
  • Native address book import is only implemented for MacOS 10.5 and 10.6.
  • Gravatar icon import may take a long time on large address books; you may receive the “slow script” warning dialog and need to give the script permission to keep running.
  • Duplicate email addresses or display names from a single service are not de-duplicated; i.e. if you have two entries for “johndoe@gmail.com” you will receive two Contact entries for them. Duplicates across services are properly de-duplicated.
  • Saved permissions don’t remember the list of people, only the list of fields.
  • E-mail autocompletion works on any text input named “e-mail”, “email”, or “recipients”.

Before installing, remember this is an experimental addon!

Thunderbird 3.1 Beta 1 Released (And How To Install It In Ubuntu Linux)

thunderbird 3.1 beta 1

Mozilla released the first beta of the new Thunderbird 3.1 codename Lanikai.

Lanikai Beta 1 is built on top of the Gecko 1.9.2 platform. Notable changes include:
  • Several fixes to improve upgrading from Thunderbird 2.
  • Several fixes for auto complete, tabs, and activity manager.
  • Several design improvements and corrections to the interface.
  • Stability and memory improvements.
  • 119 bugs fixed

For a complete change log, see this page.

Download Thunderbird 3.1 Lanikai Beta 1.

Install Thunderbird 3.1 Beta 1 in Ubuntu

Thunderbird 3.1 Beta 1 is not available in the Mozilla Daily PPA (in fact, the last Thunderbird build in the PPA is from December, 2009), but you can still install the latest Thunderbird 3.1 beta 1.

The following commands will download Thunderbird 3.1 beta 1 (for En-US localisation, if you want to download Thunderbird 3.1 beta 1 for a different localisation, see THIS page and replace the download link), extract the archive, copy all the existing Thunderbird 3.0 profiles (if you installed Thunderbird 3.0 from the Mozilla daily PPA) to the new profiles location and then runs Thunderbird. Just copy/paste the commands:

wget -O - http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/3.1b1/linux-i686/en-US/thunderbird-3.1b1.tar.bz2 | tar xj -C ~
cp -r ~/.thunderbird-3.0/* ~/.thunderbird/
cd ~/thunderbird
./thunderbird

Since this version of Thunderbird is installed by using the package distributed by Mozilla, you'll have to create a shortcut on your desktop or panel. To do this, right click your panel, select "Add to panel", select "Custom application launcher", then under "Name" enter "Thunderbird 3.1 Beta 1" and in the "Command" field, enter: "/home/your_username/thunderbird/thunderbird", replacing "your_username" with your username.

Add Thunderbird To Ubuntu Indicator Applet (Experimental)

Thunderbird Indicator Applet Ubuntu

Update: there is now a PPA to easily install this. See: Integrate Thunderbird In The Ubuntu Messaging Menu [PPA]

Ruben Verweij is working on an experimental branch of the libnotify-mozilla extension for Thunderbird, which adds rudimentary support for the Indicator Applet.

Installing it is very easy. Simply paste this commands in a terminal:
bzr branch lp:~ruben-verweij/libnotify-mozilla/experimental
cd experimental/
./build.sh

Important note: If you are using Thunderbird 3.0 (Shredder or from the Mozilla website), you must go to the following folder:
experimental/components

and edit both files, replacing every occurrence of "thunderbird.desktop" with "thunderbird-3.0.desktop"! If you don't do this you will get an empty entry in the Indicator Applet.

Once you run the ./build.sh command, the extension will be built and you will find it under the "libnotify-mozilla.xpi" name in the "experimental" folder. To install it in Thunderbird, go to Tools > Addons, on the "Extensions" tab and then drag and drop the libnotify-mozilla.xpi extension that was built earlier onto it. Then restart Thunderbird.

With libnotify-mozilla.xpi extension you will of course also get the libnotify popups:

Update: there is now a PPA to easily install this. See: Integrate Thunderbird In The Ubuntu Messaging Menu [PPA]

Mozilla Releases Weave Sync 1.0

mozilla weave 1.0

Mozilla has finally released Weave 1.0, the Firefox extension that provides Firefox user data synchronization which includes complete syncing of bookmarks, passwords, preferences, history, and even open tabs on multiple computers (or multiple operating systems) and even mobile devices.

The Mozilla Weave 1.0 final doesn't come with many changes, but it means Weave is finally open to the large public, even though I find it to be a bit unstable in what concerns the bookmarks sync. For info regarding version 1.0, see the release notes.

Once thing that Mozilla Weave doesn't synchronize is your installed addons, but for that you can try Siphon.

Mozilla Announces Personas 2.0

Mozilla released Personas 2.0 bringing many new features and improvements, such as a cleaner look, clearer navigation, and easier ways to discover and engage new art.

What's new in Personas 2.0:

1. Enhanced look: The site now has a cleaner look and feel, and also customizes an experience based on whether you are currently using the Personas add-on. The site also suggests more you might enjoy based on what you choose to wear.

2. New features: Integrated features like search and favorites. Also, features were added to the Personas add-on itself to make it easier for you to discover and manage your persona designs directly from the little fox in the lower left corner of your browser chrome.

3. More designs: Personas 1.0 launched with less than 150 designs. Thanks to a growing community of contributors and artists, the Personas gallery will likely welcome its 40,000th design by the end of this year. The gallery also includes affinity art from Harry Potter, Vans, Bob Marley, Lilly Pulitzer, and Greenpeace.

4. Easier discovery: The Personas gallery has been sorted by “up and coming” designs. This allows you to quickly view personas designs that are gaining popularity in the Personas community. You can also easily switch your view to sort by “popular” or “just added”.

5. Localization underway: the localization and web development teams have worked to make the site localizeable.

The Latest Firefox Trunk Build Adds Multi-Process Plugins

firefox 3.7Mozilla has been working on multi-processes (Google Chrome style) for some time and now this is finally available in the latest Firefox trunk build (Firefox 3.7), though it's not one tab per process yet - but for plugins.

To enable it, type about:config in the address bar, and set:
dom.ipc.plugins.enabled

to true.

firefox multi-process

Please note that even though "dom.ipc.plugins.enabled" exists (and I've enabled it) in the latest Firefox 3.7 Linux build, I couldn't find a second Firefox process, so this is probably only available for Windows right now.

Mozilla Weave 1.0 Beta 1 Released, Adds Incremental Sync

The first Beta of Weave Sync add-on is now available, and includes major changes such as:

  • incremental sync behavior - Your data will be synchronized in chunks to improve performance. Among other things, it ensures that you can continue to use Firefox normally even when you are syncing hundreds of bookmarks in the background.
  • Faster – using heuristics, Weave Sync computes an interestingness score to get you the most relevant data first. We have more details below.
  • Simpler – a user interface that allows regular users to get up and running in a matter of minutes, while being flexible to accommodate advanced users.
  • Unobtrusive – once it has been setup, Weave Sync works mostly in the background and when your computer is idle, without interrupting your regular Firefox experience.

In case you don't know, the Mozilla Weave Sync add-on lets you securely take your Firefox experience with you wherever you go. You can now surf the Web on your PC, get up and go, and have everything waiting for you on your phone: your history, open tabs, bookmarks, the Awesome Bar – just as you had left it.

This add-on is a part of the Mozilla Labs Weave project which aims to integrate services more closely with the browser.

Weave Sync currently supports continuous synchronization of your bookmarks, browsing history, saved passwords and tabs.

Install Mozilla Raindrop In Ubuntu Karmic

When Google firstly presented it's Google Wave, everybody though it was going to be a web client to integrate email, Twitter, RSS and basically... everything. If you are using Google Wave, you found out on your own that Google Wave is not for that.

But Mozilla created a client which is what many people though Google Wave was. It's called Raindrop, it's still pre-alpha and this guide will tell you how to install it in Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10. Why only for Ubuntu Karmic? Because probably some packages are too old to run Mozilla Raindrop and also, since I use Ubuntu Karmic, I cannot test it in older Ubuntu versions.

Raindrop is a Web service designed to collate, filter, and present content from disparate messaging services. It currently comes with support for Twitter, GMail, IMAP e-mail, RSS and Skype. One of the key goals is to use smarter filtering methodology to increase the visibility of important messages and reduce the amount of noise that tends to bog down Internet communication. Raindrop is built with a strong emphasis on extensibility, making it trivially easy to customize and enhance with new capabilities.

mozilla raindrop ubuntu

1. Installing all dependencies and additional tools we will need:

sudo apt-get install python-twisted python-twitter python-feedparser python-openssl python-skype python-twitter python-setuptools mercurial couchdb

2. Download Paisley and extract it to your home folder:
wget http://launchpad.net/paisley/0.1/0.1/+download/paisley-0.1.tar.gz
tar -zxvf paisley-0.1.tar.gz

3. Download Raindrop and create the config file

Download Raindrop:
hg clone -r 0.1 http://hg.mozilla.org/labs/raindrop

Important! Create a file called .raindrop in your home folder and paste the following:

-most important, must be placed inside this file:
[couch-local]
host=localhost
port=5984

Services:

- for gmail:
[account-gmail-username]
proto=imap
kind=gmail
username=YOUR_GMAIL_USERNAME@gmail.com
password=YOUR_GMAIL_PASSWORD
ssl=True

-for Twitter:
[account-twitter-username]
proto=twitter
kind=twitter
username=YOUR_TWITTER_USERNAME
password=YOUR_TWITTER_PASSWORD

-for Skype:
[account-skype-username]
proto=skype
kind=skype
username=YOUR_SKYPE_USERNAME
password=YOUR_SKYPE_PASSWORD

-for any IMAP email account:
[account-imap-username]
proto=imap
kind=imap
host=imap.YOURSERVER.COM
port=993
username=YOUR_USERNAME
password=YOUR_PASSWORD
ssl=True

-for RSS feeds:
[account-rss-feed]
proto=rss
uri=http://YOUR_RSS/rss.xml

Obviously, edit the details for your accounts.

Yes, the passwords will be stored in plain text, complain to Mozilla about that.

4. Running Mozilla Raindrop:

Open a terminal in your home folder and paste this:
cd /raindrop/server/python

Then run the following command to make sure you have all the dependencies installed:
./check-raindrop.py

If you don't get an error like this:
ERROR: The 'setuptools' package is not installed.

You can start Mozilla Raindrop using the following command (while in ~/raindrop/server/python and assuming that the paisley-0.1 folder is in your home directory like I told you):
PYTHONPATH=~/paisley-0.1 ./run-raindrop.py sync-messages --max-age=1day

The number of days to retrieve messages can be changed, for instance, you can replace --max-age=1day with --max-age=5days

Now you can open Mozilla Raindrop in a web browser using this link:
http://localhost:5984/raindrop/inflow/index.html

Please remember that Mozilla Raindrop is still at version 0.1 so it's not fully functional yet. Expect bugs and limited functionality!

Mozilla: SeaMonkey 2.0 Released

mozilla seamonkey 2.0

Mozilla has announced the availability of version 2.0 of SeaMonkey, which includes several new features, such as support for HTML 5 tags, improved JavaScript performance and off line data storage for applications. Also, the addition of a new Add-on Manager lets users install, update, disable and remove extensions.

Main SeaMonkey 2.0 Improvements:

-The Password Manager, Cookie Manager, Form Managers have been improved and a new download manager has been added, which supports cross-session resumable downloads, as you can see in the photo.

-Support for Windows 95, 98, Me and NT 4 was dropped. GTK 2.10 or higher is now required on Linux/UNIX. Support for Mac OS X 10.3 ("Panther") and 10.2 ("Jaguar") was also dropped, according to SeaMonkey 2.0 release notes.

-Session restore (crash recovery) has been added, so, when SeaMonkey crashes, all your browser windows and tabs will be restored automatically or on request. Also, users can select to always restore the browser windows and tabs from their last open session when starting SeaMonkey.

-Extensions installed under SeaMonkey 1.x are not migrated to SeaMonkey 2, and may not be compatible for reinstalling in this version due to major changes in our architecture. Extensions and Themes for SeaMonkey 2.0 can be installed from the SeaMonkey Add-Ons website or the "Get Add-Ons" section in the Add-Ons manager.

Poorly designed or incompatible extensions can cause problems with SeaMonkey, according to its website, including make it crash, slow down page display. When encountering strange problems relating to parts of SeaMonkey no longer working, the browser not starting, windows with strange or distorted appearance, degraded performance, you should restart SeaMonkey in Safe Mode.

On Windows, start using the "Safe Mode" shortcut created in your Start menu or by running seamonkey.exe -safe-mode.

On Linux, start with:
./seamonkey -safe-mode

and on Mac OS X, run:
cd /Applications/SeaMonkey.app/Contents/MacOS/
./seamonkey-bin -safe-mode

When started in Safe Mode all extensions are disabled and the Default theme is used. Disable the Extension/Theme that is causing trouble and then start normally.

Download Mozilla Firefox 3.5.3

Firefox 3.5.3 was set to be released on September, 9 (today) but it's not available on the Mozilla website just yet. But you can already download it from the following locations:

Like we wrote a few days ago, starting with the upcoming releases of Firefox 3.5.3 and Firefox 3.0.14, Mozilla will warn users if their version of the popular Adobe Flash Player plugin is out of date:

Old versions of plugins can cause crashes and other stability problems, and can also be a significant security risk. For now our focus is on the Adobe Flash Player both because of its popularity and because some studies have shown that as many as 80% of users currently have an out of date version

Tab Previews Available In Firefox 3.6

Originally planned for Firefox 3.0 and 3.5 but finally backed out in both development cycles, tab preview is available again in Firefox 3.6 alpha 1 nightlies to provide visual tab switching: you press Ctrl + Tab to get previews of the current along with the five most recently used tabs, plus an option to show all tabs’ thumbnails.

firefox tab preview

The all tabs preview includes a search bar to look for keywords among tab titles and tab close buttons for some housekeeping.

tabs preview search bar firefox

To enable it in Firefox 3.6 alpha 1 nightly, type about:config in the address bar, search for browser.ctrlTab.previews and change the value to true.

There is also a new behavior in tab previews, instead of moving to the next tab in the tab bar, you can also move to the previously used tab. To enable this new behavior, search for browser.ctrlTab.mostRecentlyUsed and change the value to true.

It definitely looks good and modern (it still has to undergo Windows and Linux theming), but I’m still not convinced on how much it will improve tab switching for heavy tab users like myself (usually 20+ tabs) and also users having less than 5 tabs, but at the very least, I find more helpful than the current combination of tab bar scroll bars and a list.

If you would like to test Firefox 3.6 alpha 1 in Ubuntu Linux, you can add the same PPA repository as for Firefox 3.5 and then:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install firefox-3.6
