New Wave Lock-Dialog Theme For Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala And Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

Last week we presented New Wave 0.90 beta 1. Well, here is also a lock-dialog theme to go with New Wave which works for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala and Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx:

Of curse, you can use this lock-dialog theme without the New Wave theme if you want.

To install it, download the package from HERE, then extract the archive contents to /usr/share/gnome-screensaver:

sudo tar -C /usr/share/gnome-screensaver -xzf 125281-newwave-lock-dialog.tar.gz

Then you need to set the New Wave lock screen theme using the gconf-editor. This can be done easily by simply pasting this in a terminal:

gconftool-2 --type string --set /apps/gnome-screensaver/lock_dialog_theme newwave

If you want to reset it, paste this in a terminal:

gconftool-2 --type string --set /apps/gnome-screensaver/lock_dialog_theme default

New Wave Gnome Theme 0.90 Beta 1 Released

New Wave is a truly awesome Gnome theme available in Ubuntu's community-themes package for quite a few releases.

A new version of New Wave has just been released: New Wave 0.90 beta 1 which you can download from HERE.

To install it, firstly you'll have to remove the existing New Wave theme (if any):

cd ~/.themes
rm -r New\ Wave

Then to install New Wave 0.90 Beta 1, right click on your Desktop, select "Change Desktop Background", select the "Themes" tab and then simply drag and drop the downloaded New Wave 0.90 beta 1 archive (.tar.gz) onto the "Themes" tab.

New Wave, Dust And Dust Sand Gnome Themes, Updated In Ubuntu Lucid [w/ Karmic Download]

Some of the best Gnome themes: New Wave, Dust and Dust Sand have just been updated to the latest version in Ubuntu Lucid.


You probably already know these themes very well and there aren't too many visual changes but here are some screenshots anyway.

Ubuntu Lucid installation:

To install / update them in Ubuntu Lucid, simply run this in a terminal:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnome-themes-ubuntu

Ubuntu Karmic (and older) installation:

To install the updates in Karmic, it is indicated that you also upgrade to the latest Murrine engine (only Dust uses it). See THIS post for a how-to.

To install the 3 updated themes in Karmic (or older), download the .deb package from HERE (direct .deb download link: click here).

Try A Newer New Wave Gnome Theme (0.9.0 Alpha) [Ubuntu]

Anton, the developer of the New Wave Gnome theme has been working on a "lighter" version of his amazing theme. For now it's not known if this will be a separate theme or will replace the New Wave theme.

The changes aren't big, but you will feel the difference when using it, as everything seems lighter:

The basic ideas is to free more space by removing some of the borders thus implying the feeling of lightness.

Before downloading it, remember it's an alpha version!

To be able to install it, navigate to your home folder, press Ctrl + H to see hidden files, and in the .themes folder, delete the "New Wave" directory. Then install the .tar.gz theme file like any other theme.

New Wave v0.8.2 Released (Gnome Theme)

The New Wave Gnome theme was updated to version 0.8.2. This new version includes lots of changes:

- Statusbar, selected text, popups in Nautilus, tooltips, text improvements (lighter text)
- More lightness in menus and desktop items (transparancy and toned colors)
- Improved active tab and horizontal line gradients.
- Transparent panels and items possible when using flat panel theme (use NW Configurator to set up)
- IconView and Assistant Window themed much better.
- Infobars are styled properly to match the theme.
- Added focus for the items in nautilus and many other apps.
- Improved selected workspace bg color in the applet.
- Fixed the rendering glitch in Appearance manager.

I've been using New Wave ever since the release of Ubuntu Jaunty and it has been my favourite theme since then. I strongly recommend it, but in the end, it's all a matter of taste I guess...

Google Chrome New Wave Theme

New Wave is the theme I use on my Ubuntu (Gnome) desktop for quite a few months. One annoyance is Google Chrome (other may also use Chromium, the open source version of Google Chrome) which is... blue.

Yes, there are lots of themes for Google Chrome (click the links for some previews) but they just don't fit the desktop.

Steve Forde, a video game artist, web designer and developer, has created a New Wave theme for Google Chrome. Finally!
