Our "Best Linux Twitter Client" poll ended today. And the winner is.... (no surprise here): Hotot (40%), followed by Gwibber (29%) and Choqok (13.7%).

Pino would have probably gotten a lot more votes if it worked with OAuth (even though it does work without OAuth with a trick, but most people probably don't know that). Either way, it's amazing how an application (Hotot) which until 2 months ago nobody knew it exists now takes the first spot of the Best Linux Twitter Client poll.

Best Linux Twitter Client

Because there are many Twitter clients out there, we asked you to nominate the best Twitter client in a comment on a post last week. Today, you all get to vote for the best Linux Twitter client based on your nominations (top 5 nominations). So, which of the following is the best Linux Twitter client?

In the nominations post, Hotot crashed all other Twitter clients with more than 50% of the total nominations. But a lot of people don't like to comment so this poll should really show us what people think is the best Linux Twitter client.

Best Linux Twitter Client?

We didn't have a poll in a long time because well..., we already had a poll about almost every type of application and for the rest, there are too many choices. This is why, today we're going to do it a bit differently. Read on!

This post is not an actual poll, but only for nominating the best Twitter client for Linux. So, what's the best Linux Twitter client? What you must do is simply write a comment on this post stating your vote. Example: "vote Pino".  You can of course discuss on the subject too, but firstly make sure you enter your vote.

The 5 most nominated applications will then be included in a poll next week. Please only nominate one Twitter application!

We're using nominations because there are a lot of Linux Twitter clients and I don't know which are the most popular 5 to use in a poll. Also, if we'd only vote using the comment system, the votes wouldn't be very accurate since a lot of people don't like to comment and just want to click the "vote" button. So, to have more accurate results, the actual poll will run in a week after todays' nominations and will include the top 5 most nominated Linux Twitter clients.

Poll Results: Best Linux Clipboard Manager

The best Linux clipboard manager poll ended yesterday. There is no surprise concerning the winner: Parcellite won the poll with 287 votes (44.15%).

Even though Parcellite is the clear winner, I am sure Pastie or Glippy will soon pass it in popularity as Parcellite is no longer maintained. Anamnesis is also already very insteresting too (it wasn't in the poll as it's very new) - and all these 3 clipboard managers get new features very quickly: Pastie already has an Anamnesis-like feature in which you can open a floating clipboard using a clipboard shortcut, Glippy got upload support for text as well as images and so on.

The number of votes was also surprisingly low compared to our other polls which means there aren't many people who use a clipboard manager. But I'm sure that once you've tried one, you'll see how useful it is - you may not need it all of the time, but it just sits in the notification area / appindicator using very low system memory and comes in very handy when you'll need it.

Best Linux Download Manager

Like we told you yesterday, here is this week's poll: the best Linux download manager. The contenders are: jDownloader, axel, aria2, wget, FatRat, SlimRat, Uget, Tucan and Kget. That's right, this time we have 3 command line tools among the poll options (even though only aria2 is an actual download manager, but wget and axel can serve as download managers too).

Poll Results: Best Linux Main Menu

For last week, we asked you which is the best Linux main menu and the results are a bit surprising.

After the first 2-3 days, it seemed Cardapio or MintMenu would be the winner but in the end GnoMenu won the poll with 481 (27.72%) votes. MintMenu came in second with 343 (19.77%) votes while Cardapio surprisingly came in 5th position (200 - 11.53%). That's because on the 3rd place you've voted for Menu Bar (the Ubuntu default menu) and on the 4th: Main Menu (the main GNOME menu). The KDE menus didn't get too many votes but that's probably because we usually write about GNOME apps.

On a side note, that means that the WebUpd8 subscribers or frequent readers prefer Cardapio / MintMenu (and GnoMenu, it had a lot of votes too in the first days, but it was usually 3rd) while occasional WebUpd8 readers like GnoMenu and the default Ubuntu or GNOME menus.

There were only 32 votes for applications outside the poll, most of them for Gnome Do or other quick launchers (like Kupfer). Dmenu and the Xfce menu got 3 votes and there were also mentions for the Cairo Dock or AWN menus.

The Best Linux Main Menu

Another week, another poll. This time you can vote for the best Linux (main) menu. I didn't include all the menus out there in the poll, but there are more options than we usually use for our polls. The contenders are: MintMenu, Lancelot, Main Menu (the main GNOME menu), Slab, Menu bar (the Ubuntu default menu), Kickoff, USP (Ubuntu System Panel), GnoMenu, K-Menu and Cardapio.

As usual, you can vote for something not among the default options by choosing "other" and then entering your answer.

Note: I've added MintMenu even though it's a USP fork and Lancelot which I believe is a Slab fork because they are somewhat different.

Poll Results: Best Linux Password Manager

The results for this week's poll: "best Linux password manager" are in. Most of the votes went to only 2 of the 6 applications we suggested. Read on!

And the winner is: KeePassX with 363 votes (49.59%) which along with LastPass (236 votes - 32.24%) are by far the most used password managers for Linux.

Revelation came in 3rd with 54 votes (7.38%), but there's a huge gap between the 2nd and 3rd place.

Poll Results: The Most Awaited Linux Project Of The Year

For this week, we had a really interesting yet weird poll on WebUpd8: we asked you what is the most awaited Linux project of the year, with the poll options including Opera 10.60 for Linux (released today), Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, GNOME Shell, Steam, The GIMP 2.8, uTorrent, Chrome OS, VLMC, Blender 2.5 and Firefox 4.0.

If the first place was something we were expecting, there are some interesting results. Read on!

Steam for Linux won the poll with 24.21% (443 votes) and on the second place came GNOME Shell - 13.99% (256 votes). I said it on Facebook and I'll say it again: reading the comments to practically all our GNOME Shell posts, people say they hate Shell yet it seems most people (it's not a majority but considering the many options the poll had, it's still a really big number) can't wait for GNOME Shell to be released. This I don't understand!

Not surprisingly, Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat came in third, Firefox 4.0 on the fourth place with The GIMP 2.8 close behind.

Maybe not as interesting as GNOME Shell results, but the number of votes received by uTorrent is also something worth mentioning: 3.44% (63 votes) - only Opera 10.60 and Blender 2.5 getting less votes. So Linux users (at least that's what I though) complain they don't have uTorrent for Linux but don't really want it. I do agree with the number of votes uTorrent got though: we have enough (and at least as good) Bittorrent clients for Linux already.

Among the "Other" answer you entered, there's one which stands out (and got quite a few votes!): Manhattan OS, an Ubuntu based distro which looks astonashing and includes most of the applications and tweaks we post here, at WebUpd8.

This week we're going to have a different kind of poll. It's a bit weird because it includes applications, a Linux distribution (Ubuntu) and a desktop environment: GNOME Shell. Poll Results: Best Linux Backup Tool / Software

The best Linux backup software poll is over. This is the first time since we started our weekly poll that a command line utility wins over all GUI alternatives.

You guessed it, the winner is: rsync (34.67%), with Back In Time (25.83%) on the second place, these 2 applications getting more than 60% of the total number of votes. However, Grsync was also mentioned quite a few times in the comments as being used with rsync so not everybody who voted for rsync uses it from the command line.

Poll Results: Best Linux File Manager

Last week we asked you to vote for the best Linux file manager. Let's see what the WebUpd8 readers voted.

As expected, Nautilus won with 1144 out of 2002 votes (57.14%) and Dolphin snatched the second place (17.68%). A kind of boring poll for the 1st and 2nd place. However the 3rd place is a nice surprise: Midnight Commander (MC) with 7.29%.

Krusader also got quite a lot of votes, even though it wasn't in the initial list: 40 votes (15 less than 6th place - Konqueror).

Best Linux File Manager

Thanks to Bill's suggestion, this week's poll is: best Linux file manager. The selection for this poll is: MC (Midnight Commander), Dolphin, Konqueror, Thunar, PCManFM and Nautilus.

This is the first time we have more than 5 applications in our weekly poll, simply because I couldn't decide which of the 6 picked applications I should remove. Of course, there are many more file managers for Linux and you can vote for them by selecting "Other" answer.


I realize Nautilus might get most of the votes but it will be interesting to see where the other votes go to. Also, most of us using Gnome are somewhat stuck with Nautilus, but for instance I consider Dolphin a lot more interesting than Nautilus.

Poll Results: Best Linux BitTorrent Client

Many thanks to everyone who voted in this week's poll: Best Linux BitTorrent client.


Here are the results:

This is the second time an application which is default in a lot of Linux distributions, after Rhythmbox (for Best Linux Music Player). I for one was expecting a lot more votes for Deluge Torrent which comes with a lot of great features.

qBittorrent got almost 10% of the votes (208) which I think is fair considering it doesn't get too much publicity on blogs (don't really know why, as I find it to be a great BitTorrent client).


From "Other results", most votes got Vuze (44), uTorrent with Wine (17), Flush (12) and the rest got 1-2 votes.
