Jupiter 0.0.46 Released With SATA Link Power Management And USB Autosuspend Support

Jupiter 0.0.46

Jupiter is a Gnome applet you can use on your netbook or laptop to switch between maximum, high performance and power saving mode, change the resolution and orientation of the screen, enable or disable the bluetooth, touchpad, WiFi. Jupiter also comes with Eeepc SHE (Super Hybrid Engine) support.

Jupiter 0.0.46 was released today with device power management (for devices that support it such as PCI devices, etc.), SATA Link power management and USB Autosuspend support. For info about these as well as other tips and tricks to use less power on your netbook / laptop, see LessWatts.org.

As usual, the latest Jupiter version is available in the Jupiter WebUpd8 PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/jupiter
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install jupiter

If you own an Asus Eeepc, also install jupiter-support-eee to get SHE support:
sudo apt-get install jupiter-support-eee

Jupiter is included by default in Fuduntu, a Fedora 14 remix made by Fewt, the Jupiter developer. It is also installed by default in Aurora, ex-Eeebuntu (actually, Jupiter was especially designed for Eeebuntu).

If you don't want to use our Jupiter PPA or don't use Ubuntu, download Jupiter from Sourceforge.

Jupiter Ubuntu PPA (Hardware And Power Management Applet For Netbooks And Laptops)

jupiter ubuntu

A while back we told you about Jupiter, an application created by Fewt for Aurora OS (ex Eeebuntu) (but also works in other Linux distributions) which can be used to switch between maximum and high performance and power saving mode, change the resolution and orientation, enable or disable the bluetooth, touchpad, WiFi and so on. But most importantly it allows your Eeepc netbook to take advantage of SHE (Super Hybrid Engine).

Jupiter is not just for EeePC, it also works on other netbooks or laptops. Read our Jupiter review for more info.

Since Jupiter can only be downloaded by Ubuntu users via Sourceforge, we've created a PPA for Ubuntu Karmic, Lucid and Maverick users so they can stay up to date with the latest Jupiter packages.

Before installing, please note that Jupiter is only supported for Aurora and Fedora. So use it in Ubuntu at your own risk!

Add the Jupiter PPA and install it in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, 10.04 Lucid Lynx or 10.10 Maverick Meerkat

1. Add the Jupiter PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/jupiter
sudo apt-get update

2. Install Jupiter

a) The main Jupiter package - works on any netbooks:
sudo apt-get install jupiter

b) Support for EeePC - required for SHE (Super Hybrid Engine)
sudo apt-get install jupiter-support-eee

Jupiter: Take Advantage Of Asus Super Hybrid Engine (SHE) In Linux [Ubuntu .deb]

jupiter ubuntu

SHE (Super Hybrid Engine) is a technology created through the redesigning of hardware, software and BIOS and can bring an up to 53% longer battery life for the Asus Netbooks. In addition, the Super Hybrid Engine automatically manages and regulates power distribution based on usage requirements.

To be able to use the Super Hybrid Engine in Linux, you need an application (applet) such as Jupiter (along with jupiter-support-eee - this is required for Super Hybrid Engine support) which was designed for Eeebuntu, but works on other Linux distributions too.

But Jupiter is not just for the Super Hybrid Engine equipped netbooks. In fact Jupiter works with every laptop, desktop, or netbook computer regardless of brand. It can switch between maximum and high performance and power saving mode, change the resolution and orientation, enable or disable the bluetooth, touchpad, WiFi and so on.

Overall, Jupiter is a great application for any netbook / laptop and I strongly recommend it. I've used it on my netbook for a while and it does make a difference!

Note: I've found a small bug: when switching performance modes, don't go from the highest profile to the lowest, but instead go from Power Saver to High Performance and only then to Maximum Performance (and the other way around) or else Jupiter won't work until you restart the computer.

Download Jupiter .deb and .rpm packages | Remember to also download and install jupiter-support-eee if you own an Asus EeePC to be able to take advantage of SHE =) | Update: there is now a Jupiter Ubuntu PPA!

For a similar application, see Eee Control.

Special thanks to EmCH and Fewt from our UNE optimization post comments for the tip!
