Latest gThumb Dev Build (2.11.x) Adds PicasaWeb Support [Ubuntu .deb Downloads Included]

F-Spot is an almost complete photo management application but has a problem (according to many people): it uses MONO. An advantage over similar tools like gThumb is the option to upload to PicasaWeb or Flickr. For the stable version of gThumb (2.10) that is, because the latest development version of gThumb (2.11.x) has already gained PicasaWeb support (not Flickr support for now though)!

If you want to try the latest gThumb, don't worry about having to compile it from GIT because you can simply install it from the Web Upd8 PPA with just a few clicks / commands (and to think it took me nearly 3 hours to update the original debian config files). Unfortunately, only for Ubuntu Karmic and Lucid users.

Before installing, remember this is an unstable gThumb version, so expect to find bugs!

To install the latest gThumb 2.11.1 from WebUpd8 Launchpad PPA you have 2 choices

1. Add the PPA (but remember there are lots of experimental packages, so only do this if you want the GIT versions of VLC, etc.):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8

and to install gThumb:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gthumb

or upgrade:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

2. Simply download the latest gThumb from Web Upd8 PPA:

Ubuntu Karmic

32bit:

Note: you need to remove any previous gThumb versions before installing the above .deb packages:

sudo apt-get remove --purge gthumb gthumb-data

Once installed, you will find gThumb under Applications > Graphics.


To upload to PicasaWeb, you firstly have to enable the Picasa plugin which you will find under Edit > Extensions:

You can then start uploading your photos to PicasaWeb by selecting Files > Export To > Picasa Web Album:

PictureWall: Sleek Local And Google.com Image Viewer For Linux

Picture Wall is Qt based Linux application (but it can be compiled on Windows too) to view local images as well as search queried images on google.com with with a really nice user interface.

Among PictureWall features are: animated image zoom in and zoom out on mouse pressed, entire images zoom in and zoom out on mouse wheel, horizontal scrolling of images on mouse drag in respective horizontal direction.

Basically, PictureWall is a really cool way of viewing images. To understand what I'm talking about, take a look at this short Picture Wall demo I've just recorded:

RPhoto: Almost Perfect Image Viewer [Windows & Linux]

RPhoto is an open-source image viewer and editor for Windows and Linux. Its origin resides in the lack of a simple software capable of cropping photos with a constant ratio, to avoid white borders when printing.

RPhoto is lightweight, very fast, and offers basic rotate, resize and crop functions, optimizes JPEG files, has a built-in file explorer and is able to read EXIF data.

After using it a bit, RPhoto already became my default image viewer and I am sure most of you will also like it! But I said 'almost perfect'; that's because I couldn't find a way to zoom the images which is something quite basic...

Main features are:

• Crop images with a constant width / height ratio (by example 4:3 for numeric photos)
• Rotate / Flip photos
• Lossless crop / rotate / flip operations.
• Available under Linux and Windows.

Makagiga is a free, easy-to-use, cross-platform java application for doing a variety of tasks, such as text editing, todo listing, RSS reading, and simple image viewing. Installing plug-ins in Makagiga is very easy:

All you have to do is download a plugin you want to install, create the plugins directory in the folder where Makagiga is installed:

then unzip the plugin you downloaded and finally, restart Makagiga.

When you first start Viewer2, you basically just see a blue background. But move your mouse to the edges of the screen where you will find all the tools that you need to browse, view and tag your images.
