Minitube 1.4 (Plays YouTube Videos Without Flash) Released, Available In The WebUpd8 PPA

Minitube is a native YouTube client for Linux (as well as Windows and Mac OS X) which you can use to watch videos without Flash Player. Further more, Minitube can also be used to download videos from YouTube.

Minitube 1.4 was released today, the new release finally bringing YouTube channels support:

Being able to watch YouTube channel in Minitube brings a whole new depth to the application. Discovering channels is easy thanks to the autocomplete popup, which suggests the most relevant channels for a given keyword.

The new version also fixes a lot of playback problems (Minitube now tries to find a fast stream and discard slow ones) and also comes with a small Linux command line feature: you can now launch an YouTube video from the command line using Minitube (you can specify a keyword or an URL).

Install Minitube 1.4 in Ubuntu form the WebUpd8 PPA

As usual, the latest Minitube 1.4 is available in the WebUpd8 PPA. Please note that I've only tested it in Maverick!

Add the PPA and install Minitube 1.4 in Ubuntu using the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install minitube

PPA Updates: Minitube, gThumb, Launchpad Getkeys, Dropbox Share

This post is just a short summary of some updated packages in the WebUpd8 PPAs.

Minitube

Minitube stopped working yesterday due to some changes to the YouTube website. The update broke all applications for playing / downloading YouTube videos, but luckily Minitube has been updated (version 1.3) to include a fix. The new version also comes with a new icon and is available as always in the main WebUpd8 PPA, for Ubuntu Lucid and Maverick:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install minitube

Unfortunately this version also comes with a regression: the Linux version has lost its seeking functionality. Hopefully it will be re-added in a future version.

gThumb

I've also updated gThumb (2.12.1) which is now in sync with Debian unstable. This is not a new version of the application but a new version of the packaging which fixes some pretty important bugs. As usual, gThumb is available both in the WebUpd8 gThumb PPA and in the main WebUpd8 PPA.

Install it from the gThumb PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/gthumb
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gthumb

Launchpad Getkeys

Late last night I've updated Launchpad Getkeys to work with non-English Ubuntu. Initially, the script only worked if you had installed Ubuntu in English.

Install Launchpad Getkeys:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install launchpad-getkeys

Unfortunately the script does not work if you need a proxy.

Dropbox Share

Dropbox Share has been updated to use "dropbox-index.html" instead of "index.html" file name when sharing a folder (an .html file is created when sharing a folder so you can easily navigate all the subfolders in a web browser). The new version also removes these dropbox-index.html files automatically when unsharing a folder (and when the script notices you've removed the link from the Dropbox Public folder).

Install Dropbox Share:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install dropbox-share

Minitube 1.2 Beta Released, Adds Video Downloads, Gnome Multimedia Keys Support

Minitube is an application for watching YouTube without Flash.

Minitube 1.2 beta was just released, bringing a much requested feature: Gnome multimedia keys support as well as YouTube video downloads.

The videos are downloaded into your ~/Videos folder, but you can change the location once you start downloading your first video (see the above screenshot).

Install Minitube 1.2 beta in Ubuntu

Minitube 1.2 beta is available in the WebUpd8 PPA so Ubuntu (Karmic, Lucid and Maverick) users can easily install it using the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install minitube

Once installed, you can find Minitube under Applications > Sound & Video.

If you're not using Ubuntu, you can download Linux 32bit binaries @ Minitube website along with Mac OSX files.

Minitube 1.1 Released - Upgrade To Get It Working Again

Minitube is a native YouTube client for Windows (soon), Linux and Mac OS X. With it you can watch YouTube videos in a new way: you type a keyword, Minitube gives you an endless video stream. Minitube does not require the Flash Player.

Like we told you a few days ago, YouTube changed something which broke all the applications for downloading or playing YouTube videos. This includes VLC 1.1.1, youtube-dl and of course, Minitube.

This is why a new Minitube version was released today so if you want a working Minitube, you'll have to install the latest 1.1.

Besides fixing the YouTube issue, Minitube 1.1 also comes with a toolbar restyling and fixes moving more than one video down or up in the playlist.

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, 10.04 Lucid Lynx and 10.10 Maverick Meerkat users can install Minitube 1.1 from the WebUpd8 PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install minitube

Minitube 1.0 Released - Play YouTube Videos Without Flash [Ubuntu .deb Download]

Minitube 1.0 was released yesterday. So what is Minitube?

Minitube is a native YouTube client for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. With it you can watch YouTube videos in a new way: you type a keyword, Minitube gives you an endless video stream. Minitube does not require the Flash Player.

Version 1.0 finally brings Full HD (1080p) video support, as well as other minor new features such as the ability to copy the YouTube link and the video stream URL to the clipboard.

Minitube comes with an Ubuntu PPA, but unfortunately version 1.0 has not been added to the PPA. However, you can download a .deb file:

Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx:

Minitube Native YouTube Client For Linux And Mac OSX Doesn't Require Flash Player

Minitube is a native YouTube client for Linux and Mac OS X. The really useful part about Minitube is that it does not require Flash Player.

The application allows you to watch the movies in full screen and very important: it requires no installation; but you do need Qt version >= 4.5 and the Phonon libraries installed. On Ubuntu, installing the phonon package will pull in all you need to run Minitube.
